What The Critics are Saying about the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD Card

"To say we were blown away doesn't do justice to how impressed we were with the audio this card pumped out."
--Joel Durham Jr, Maximum PC, April 2011

High-Fidelity Components Deliver Pristine Sound

The X-Fi Titanium HD offers a significant improvement over a standard motherboard's onboard audio. The card delivers a signal-to-noise ratio of 122 dB, which ensures that audio playback is pure and distortion-free. The card's components make a particular difference when playing music: high and mid tones are reproduced with pitch-perfect detail, and lows are defined and tight.

Outfitted with audio-enhancing technologies, the Titanium HD features THX's TruStudio Pro technology, which helps preserve the original balance and timbre of film audio. The card also supports Dolby Digital and DTS decoding formats, giving it multichannel and surround sound capabilities.

Swappable Op-Amps for Customizable Audio

The Titanium HD features fully customizable components--the card's op-amps are swappable, meaning that they can be switched and tweaked to fit your desires. This allows you to adjust sound coloration and personalize your listening experience. Audiophiles will be able to create a sound profile to fit tonal preferences.

EAX 5.0 Enhances Gaming Audio and Performance

The Titanium HD has been specially engineered to handle gaming applications. Using hardware-accelerated EAX 5.0 technology, the sound card delivers crisp, deep audio that will fully immerse you in the game.

In addition to enriching your gaming audio, the Titanium HD will boost your PC's gaming performance as a whole. By functioning as a dedicated sound unit, the card frees up resources that would otherwise be tied up in audio processes. This allows your PC to dedicate more of its processing power towards other tasks, like graphical and AI processing. The result is a gaming experience free of hiccups and slowdowns.

Supports Wide Range of I/O Connectivity

Built for versatility, the Titanium HD supports connections to a variety of devices. It features ports that can accommodate microphones, headphones, home studio speakers, portable music players, AV Receivers, game consoles, and more.

The sound card is designed for solid headphone performance: the card supports up to 115 dB and 24-bit/96 kHz output, allowing for high-definition headphone playback. Microphone recordings are noteworthy, too, thanks to the card's latency-reducing ASIO technology.

Compatibility and System Requirements

The Titanium HD sound card is compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit) and Windows 7. (The card is not Mac compatible.)

To install the card, you'll need an Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD equivalent processor; an Intel, AMD, or compatible motherboard; 1 GB RAM; at least 600 MB free hard disk space; an available PCI Express slot; and a CD/DVD drive for software installation. Headphones or amplified speakers are also required to use the card.

The Titanium HD is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty.

What's in the Box

X-Fi Titanium HD Sound Card, quick start leaflet, installation CD, stereo to RCA cable, optical cable, and user guide.

This is still a very relevant piece of hardware, I was concerned that this model is now a few years old, and not featured on Creative's web site, seeming to be replaced with Z series and Recon series cards.

I am so pleased with this card that I installed last night that I felt compelled to write a review.

I don't game, and it seems that the new cards are targeted (probably smartly) to the game crowd.
I also see a lot of headphone slanted reviews, and I almost never use headphones.

I do however really appreciate subtle differences in sound quality that others sometimes don't notice, for instance, I do hear "flat" and "tired" or "muddy" sounds from MP3 versus a non compressed format, I get irritated when the music I like on XM is more compressed than some other XM Channels, so I guess I might lean audiophile, but I often get lost trying to follow "real" audiophile discussions, and esoteric nuances are mostly not perceptible to me, so I would not place myself in that league. I guess I would be more like an enthusiast than an audiophile.

I will describe my hardware first:
Music is on a Synology DS212J NAS (network attached storage) device in .Flac format (lossless format vs. MP3 which is typically compressed format.)

Computer is a fairly modern (but not amazing) ASUS computer, AMD, X2 something, dual core chip, Windows 7 64 bit, 4GB of ram.

My network is wired, and has gigabit LAN ports and switch gear.

I connect from the computer to the audio Components via Toslink (fiber optic) which was included in the box with the sound card, and is different from the one you might already have, because the connector on one side of the cable isn't the standard doghouse shape, it actually pushes into the bottom RCA jack of the card, which concerned me, but is working just fine, and the SB1270 came with 2.

I use a Yamaha HTR-5860 Receiver as a pre-amp, it connects to a Carver M-1 amplifier for the main speakers, and a Carver AV-64 cathedral amplifier for center and rear.

I use Definitive BP-10's as main speakers, a Golden Ear Forcefield 4 subwoofer, and Definitive bookshelf and center. Both the definitive speakers and carver amp's are pretty old, say 15 years plus.

I use MediaMonkey as the front end, which is kind of like I-tunes, with additional customization options.

Like many others who have reviewed, I was using the onboard audio, via toslink (fiber optic) cable.

I decided to look for a soundcard when I noticed that making small changes to the equalizer, like increasing the bass frequencies for some older bass-light rock for instance, really got muddy and distorted very quickly. I assumed that this was just a bad equalizer in MediaMonkey, because I was using fiber optic (digital signal) which I thought would not be affected or distorted to any significant degree, and that is where I was very wrong.

I installed the Soundblaster Titanium, set the EQ flat in media monkey, and then used the software from Soundblaster, and it was so different. The EQ works like a champ, the EAX modes for Opera house, or Jazz Club are as good or better than the DSP modes from my Yamaha, and the Dolby live encoding feature provided drastic improvement to the geometry and separation of the music. It really adds a depth and a lively but warm tone.

I listened to some classical, and the imaging of the music was very noticeable, for instance, the piano was on my left, very clearly, I could hear the difference in position of the string instruments, and percussion so clearly.

Next I listened to Ke$ha and Britney Spears and Nelly and was very pleased with a noticeable improvement in clarity with the bass from the subwoofer, and the clarify option on the THX software was really noticeable here too.

Next I listened to Boston, AC/DC, and Joe Satriani, and Dire Straits. All excellent here as well.

No hiss, pop or hum was evident from the card at all.

If there is a weakness, I haven't found it. It is superior in every way to the on board card, and my music really is better than CD now, which I have looked forward to for a long time.

The only thing that I noticed that could be in the "worse" column is that when you switch from .flac or other lossless items, to watch a video on youtube, you will really notice how bad the youtube sound is, and you will probably want to listen to something else.

I hope this helps you make a decision, it was very definitely a good decision for me.

The card was easy to install. I have a sound bar connected to a Denon receiver and Difinity subwoofer. For audio, I was using the Realtek soundcard built-in to my motherboard. The sound was okay, but I knew that it could be a little better. After reading many reviews on sound cards, I narrowed the field to the Creative Labs X-fi Titanium HD and the Asus Xonar Essence STX. Both cards are loaded with high-end components. I chose the Titanium HD because it was on sale last week (not quite Cyber Monday, but a deal is a deal) and I do not regret the purchase.

Installing the card took about 15 minutes. I searched the Internet to find out if there are any installation pitfalls before opening the box and my search took most of the time. STEPS: Shutoff the computer, unplug the computer, open the computer case, insert the card into a slot, close the computer, plug in the computer, turn on the computer, install the software from the CD that came with the card, connect to the Internet and use the Creative Labs Auto-update program that installs from the CD and play a movie or music that you've played on your computer before.

Dr. Who suddenly had crystal-clear footsteps as he ran down the hallway, Star Wars the Old Republic (beta tester) suddenly roared to life. I could clearly hear the difference between walking on stone versus squishing through mud. Suddenly my sound bar and subwoofer really came to life and my little loft man-cave rumbled with the power of my audio equipment. I got tingles realizing that I really had gotten a good deal on my speakers. My movies, music and games sound a thousand times (sorry engineers) better! I am wowed every time I played something and realized how much I had been settling for mediocre audio. I started playing songs, and videos and games just to hear the difference. Now to dig up my Transformers Blu Ray.

A caveat here is that if you have audio files that are low quality then the problems in those files will be evident when using this card because it brings out all the details whether good or bad.

The most amazing experience so far with this sound set up was looking at the wall of Alduin in Skyrim. I could hear the sound of the wind coming through a hole in the ceiling, I could hear water dripping and then a dragon swooshed by overhead, and I could tell which direction it headed. I ran through the door where it sounded like the dragon was going and there it was! It turned, did a dragon shout, and I was sweating as the audio encircled me with flapping wings and the rumbling of the earth as the dragon's mass struck the earth. The walls rumbled and I did a dragon shout and there was a booming echo, which I felt; my subwoofer had not thrown sound like this before. Fireballs made my desk rattle and after the fight, I changed the volume to a more neighbor-friendly setting. While writing this I was inspired to install Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and revisit my experience there. As Patrick Stewart started his narrative, I knew I had a new experience to explore.

There are a few quirks though, like THX audio defaulting to playing through my left monitor instead of through the receiver. If you have one monitor and are not using a mini HDMI cable to connect to your video card then this might not apply to you.

I have also experienced a renaissance with my Sennheiser headphones because they sound fantastic with this card. I had felt disappointed about my headphones because the audio was weak and the surround was mediocre, but not anymore. I have stopped shopping for replacements because these are terrific. This is a great card and at least for now it will be hard to find something better for the money.
Update: My best audio experience with this new card so far is now the Samsung Demon HD - Blu-Ray Sound 7.1 ch on Youtube.

You owe it to yourself to get this card. I was perfectly happy using the on board sound processor that came with my mother board but when I wanted to transfer my vinyl records to digital the onboard sound card just did not cut it. After researching my different options in add in sound cards it came down to 2 cards I could use to do the job I had in mind. An ASUS Xonar Essence STX or the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Tatanium HD card shown here. Although the Asus card was newer tech than the 2 year old X-Fi card I opted for the SB X-Fi card based on the reviews and testimonials of others and I have to agree with every one of them. The difference in quality between an onboard sound card and the X-Fi is night and day. I thought that my PC system sounded pretty fine before I added this card to my system but now, I think I would put it up against my surround sound home theatre system for quality. Connecting this card to my turntable via a Cambridge Audio Azur 551P-B phono pre-amp was a snap and I am now happily converting my old vinyl LPs to digital knowing that the quality of the recordings I attain is about as good as it can be. As I said, the technology is getting on with this card but they can still be found and they are getting hard to come by but I can assure you that it will definitely be worth the effort.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but has some flaws
Reviewed in Canada on September 30, 2013
From the start, I hadn't checked much reviews from the product: a friend of mine had bought the product, he was pleased with it so I bought just the same product.

I bought it for gaming purpose, not for content creation, so I will not comment on this since I have no knowledge of it. Also, I only used it with headphones, Astro A40 with MixAMP.

With normal 3.5mm headphone jack, the card is flawless and gives good results. Nothing to complain about.

When I hooked the new headphones (the Astro) using a optical out, I've started having problems with the card: whenever there was no sound, as in no media playing, there is a clicking noise (about 100 clicks a minute) comming out of the optical out. I've changed cables, headphones, drivers, etc, but the noise kept going. After searching the net, I found I wasn't the only one having the problem. The only known solution is to put the card into "Musical Creation" mode for the noise to stop. You can always change the mode to gaming or something else before starting your game, but I can hardly believe a company in the sound industry for so many years cannot fix the problem with their drivers.

So that's it: product is great, apart from that very annoying clicking sound comming from the optical out in all modes but "Musical Creation".
