Review
— from the foreword by Terry Brooks, bestselling fantasy novelist
“A good book about writing will guide you like a torch. You finish it and you’ve learned some useful lessons; you feel enlightened. But a great writing book is hard to finish because it keeps exploding in your face. All it makes you want to do is write. Everything else: blown away. The Creative Compass is like that, a box of inspiring dynamite. And of course that’s just what you want. Boom! Get back to your writing!”
— Steven Goldsberry, creative writing professor and author of The Writer’s Book of Wisdom
“This is a wonderfully insightful guide to the art of transforming ideas and stories into books. It presents old narrative and stylistic truths in a new, highly imaginative way.”
— Stephen Kinzer, author of The Brothers: John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, and Their Secret World War
About the Author

About the authors
Most people who've read Way of the Peaceful Warrior (or seen the movie) already know a few aspects of my life. And you may have seen the following bio at my website:
"Dan Millman, a former world champion athlete, gymnastics coach, martial arts instructor, and college professor, is author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior (adapted to film in 2006), and 16 other books read by millions of people in 29 languages. Dan teaches worldwide and has influenced people from all walks of life. The author and his wife, Joy, live in Brooklyn, NY. His most recent work includes The Hidden School, completing the 'peaceful warrior saga,' as well as an audio program, "The Complete Peaceful Warrior's Way," available through Audible.com.
Dan's website - peacefulwarrior.com - features his books, events, online courses, and life purpose guidance.
Personal note:
In my youth I focused on self-improvement, taking memory courses, speed reading; practicing martial arts and gymnastics. Then one day I realized that no matter how much I improved myself, only one person benefited — but if I could influence other people in a positive way, that made my life more meaningful and exciting.
I began teaching gymnastics, and elements from the martial arts — that soon shifted into the larger arena of personal growth. Today my work centers around writing and speaking. I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to intersect with many lives around the world.
Joy and I have been married for more than four decades and we continue to grow closer as we gain perspective and cultivate a sense of humor (about ourselves and one another). The years have gifted us with three daughters and four grandchildren.
I believe you'd find me a good (but not perfect) example of what I teach. I continue to practice, to learn, to serve as well as I can. I do my best to keep my head in the clouds but feet on the ground.
For more info about my work, visit www.peacefulwarrior.com — join my eList, follow me on Facebook or Twitter, or just search for peaceful warrior.
Sierra Prasada is coauthor with her father, Dan Millman, of The Creative Compass: Writing Your Way from Inspiration to Publication, now also an online course at the Daily Om. While living in and reporting on the Middle East, she gained proficiency in Arabic and wrote her first book, Creative Lives, profiling Lebanese artists. More recently, she has written a screenplay adaptation and is hard at work on a novel. Sierra lives with her husband in Brooklyn. https://www.sierraprasada.com

For instance, Dan and Prasada break out the sharing of a book into nine distinct sales that the author must make. Starting with winning support from advance readers (who give valuable feedback in the formative stages), once the work is complete, the sales process continues through a series of sales to an agent, an editor, an in-house publishing committee and later to the booksellers and only eventually to the end readers who ideally do that ninth sale of telling family and friends to buy your book.
Dan also talks candidly about self publishing for those who do not wish to go the traditional route. (For my part, as a long term indie author and publisher, I caution any newbie author to avoid paying thousands to any masked vanity press who claims to be helping you "self publish." If the publisher's business model is based on selling books to authors instead of selling books to readers, run the other direction as fast as you can.)
A charming book full of valuable writing and insights, THE CREATIVE COMPASS is essential reading for any writer looking at traditional, independent or self publishing.
The point is this: Not every beginning writer has a master teacher to show them the ropes, and that is where The Creative Compass comes in. Even though I had penned three books to this point, I was amazed at what I learned, not only on how to write, but also how to get your book published. My head is still swimming - in a good way.
So, if you are an aspiring or even a published author, I most highly recommend this book. While no book on writing is any match for a teacher like Betty, you will find no better text to teach you the ins and outs of writing and eventual publication.
- Gary D. Conrad, author of "Murder on Easter Island," "Oklahoma Is Where I Live," and "The Lhasa Trilogy"
I rated this book 4 stars because it's a good read with great reminders of what it takes to write something worthwhile.
As a humbled professional would to another, do yourself a favor and read "The Creative Compass".
This how-to book on writing fiction, with a trace about writing
non-fiction, epitomizes the creative approach. The chief images are
not defined but are shown through examples, not very well for my money.
'Your Master Metaphor' never came together as an understandable
concept to me. 'The Stickiest Idea' is another failure. It doesn't
differentiate between stickiest ideas that are good, that lead to solid
efforts and those sticky ideas that are just personal quirks without
interest to others. And of all the ideas that stick into your head, no
distinction is mentioned of the magnitude or complexity that will do.
