There's two parts: (1) an enjoyable, academically verified review of what Creativity (vs creativity) is and (2) anecdotes and insights from living creative 'geniuses' from Disney, Ben & Jerry's, Netflix, and more.
Typically, books that debunk societal norms (e.g. "Natural talent is the key to creativity") rely on straw-man anecdotes. Instead, Allen applies rigorous research to convince the reader otherwise. Allen laces in relatable, fun anecdotes along the way. (Did you know Mozart's first concierto was at age 14, not 3, and after 10 years of Europe's best private tutors?) The concise yet playful writing style has you read a near literature review on the science of creativity without even realizing it. The book then transitions to Allen distilling his learnings from interviewing dozens of breakout creative successes.
Spoiler: while creativity isn't magic, the truth is it is an excessive amount of deliberate practice!

I got my copy just a couple days ago and I have not been able to put it down.
The book takes us through history and solving the mythic creative magic, the fact that genius is not a god given right, but it has to be cultivated with devotion and practice.
Creativity as Allen says is achievable by anyone looking to put in the work, similar to the notion pointed out in Outliers by Malcom Gladwell. The 10,000 hour rule holds true by the stories in this book.
And as Gary Vaynerchuk talks about in his book Crush It! & Crushing It! Success doesn’t come to those who wait for the spark of genius, but to those that work at their craft relentlessly day in and day out.
To achieve mastery in anything this book goes into the details of how The Beatles’ Paul McCartney, how Mozart’s prodigy came with grueling hard work.
I'm a strong believer of hard work. We need to tweak with resolve to find that creative solution.
I recommend this book to anyone trying to understand what it takes to be a successful at their craft.
It’s not a self-help book, but it shows you what and how others did it.
One thing that became clear was why almost every successful business person I know reads voraciously. The answer is the first law of the Creative Curve, consumption. The Community and Iterations chapters or laws also made complete sense.
I think where most people will fall down with Allen's prescription for creative success is the second law: Imitation. Imitation requires a sacrifice for the truly artistic type, which is conformity. As the old adage goes, what's popular is not good. If you have this ethos, then parts of you will writhe when you read Allen's book.
However; if you are in it to win it, specifically to create for mass consumption, to be an artistic or business success, then follow his patterns for success closely. I know my best successes occurred when I was operating with at least 3/4 of the Creative Curve laws in play.
At a minimum, it made me think about my current approaches to creativity, and caused me to tweak a few things. Thanks, Allen!
