By far one of the best books I’ve ever read. Dr. Douma’s writing is engaging, relatable, and insightful. He facilely guides readers through the practice of history, historical methods, and how we should be teaching students about history. He discusses the importance and mechanics of using of metaphors in writing about history in a way that will inspire writers to improve their craft. He references and recommends other beneficial texts like those of E.H. Carr and Robin Winks. This book is an invaluable resource and guide for both students and educators, and aspiring and practicing historians alike. Dr. Douma has elevated my thinking about what it means to be a historian.

Creative, Historical, Thoughtful, and Even Funny

First, I read a print-out of this book last year at the request of my friend Dr. Michael Douma so I am very familiar with this work even though it has not hit the shelves yet. After I started reading that print-out, I soon found myself very disappointed.
I was hoping for one of those dry, painful, laborious, scholarly, academic, heavily footnoted, wearisome reads that would only appeal to a half dozen other scholars across the country. Instead, I discovered that this book is fun.
Fun? Can we really allow the world to find out that what we history people do is done because it is so much fun? Let them think history is mounds of facts and details.
I fear this book will confirm and enrich what I have long believed and labored to keep secret.
Here is what I wrote about the book last year:
"Michael Douma's book is really irritating to me. It is not because of any thing I object to; rather, it is because this has just appeared after I spent over 30 years teaching history. In the future, I will not ask upcoming history teachers if they have read this book, but I will ask if they have embraced it."
History teachers: Get this book. I know it is not cheap, but I repeat, Get this book.

Best Methods Book...Maybe Ever

Okay, I guess I haven't read enough historical methods books to *really* say this is the best ever, but it is *without a doubt* my favorite. This book is a thoroughly enjoyable read, in every sense of the word. It is of course fascinating and thought-provoking, but the writing is so good that you *rush* from page to page just to get more of it. It's clever, insightful, tough and critical (when appropriate), and riddled with wonderful ideas for teachers at all levels. Probably most of all, though, it is *so funny.* I seriously don't think I've read such a funny history book, either. Or at least, it's been so long that I don't remember the last one that made me actually laugh out loud repeatedly throughout the text. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on a copy as soon as you can, because you won't think about the past quite the same way again.
