Creativity theories have not been much used in Internet research. This study attempts to compensate for this omission by applying concepts and methods of creativity research to the study of Internet culture. It seeks to discover the internal logic of the development of creative forms, to identify the factors that account for change and to analyse the relationship between Internet creativity and wider sociocultural contexts. The concept of Internet creativity is applied to the study of the history of the Russian Internet. Case studies are devoted to the development of online media, an artistic genre, an online community and a humorous web site. The theoretical issues include the role of cultural identity and social context as a shaping force of Internet culture; motivation for creativity; user contribution, collaboration and the interplay between personal and collective creativity; the opposition between the official and the non-official spheres; issues of censorship and free speech. The study will be useful to creativity theorists, Internet producers, or anyone interested in contemporary Russian culture.

Unique overview of the Russian cyberspace

This is a well-researched and well-argumented book on the history of the Internet in Russia. The author covers a fascinating topic of the rise of the power of the Internet in Russia and its influence on the Russian society and on modern cultural trends. Unfortunately western media often focus more on a criminality of the Russian internet, and less on the creativity of the Russian internet users. This book fills the gap.
To illustrate his argument that the Russian Internet is very much linked to the cultural development in his native country, the author looks at a LifeJournal project and an Internet community built around it; he also researches the Russian anecdotes (jokes) and the cyber-humor. The book is very useful for those who study new media and globalization in this part of the world.

Informative study, good read

This is an informative study on a topic which has earned surprisingly little coverage in English in the past years: the formation and history of the Russian-speaking Internet. Gorny has not only transformed it into an entertaining narrative, but he interlards his analysis with inspiring observations of online creativity. Occasionally, the original status of the manuscript as a dissertation makes itself felt, but Gorny's background as a journalist still makes for a very good read. I found this a useful introduction to the subject and recommend it to specialists and students in the field without any hesitation.
