Worked great on a mini PC, but may require some driver tweaking to get full volume

My wife's mini desktop PC only had an audio output/headphone jack on the front, which left a speaker cable coming out of the front of the machine and interfering with the keyboard right in front of it due to cramped desk space. This was an easy and cheap solution to add audio output off of a USB hub that was connected to the back of the machine, keeping the front of the PC free of extra cables.

It was easy plug-and-play setup, but initially on this Windows 11 PC the volume was a bit low, even maxed out. I just had to nearly max out all the controls in Windows, the music app, etc. I tried installing the Creative Labs drivers for it but didn't notice any difference. The strange thing is, I uninstalled the Creative Labs software in "Add & Remove Programs", then I uninstalled all of my sound devices from Device Manager including the built-in ones, then I told Device Manager to scan for new devices. It reinstalled everything, including the Play3! with the Microsoft drivers. BAM! The volume was now so loud, I had to cut the Windows volume to 50% and even then, the music app had to be set to around 30-40% volume. I'm not sure why this happened, but did see some other mentions of it for this device on Reddit. If this happens, try uninstalling and reinstalling the device in Device Manager. It made a huge difference for me in terms of volume output.

My laptop has 1 all purpose jack for speakers, headphones, microphone, and line in. It doesn't work very well. I bought the SB Play! 3 to have another line level signal input jack for a project. Works perfectly. Later tried using the SB Play 3 for audio out and it gives better quality sound than my on board sound card. Dirt cheap - but SB quality! Nice!

Interesting effects, low volume/power

This card helped me to solve microphone issues on the motherboard, so it works well as an external sound card. I am still on the fence about the sound effects (Surround, Crystalizer, Bass, Smart volume, Dialog plus). Crystalizer and Bass seem to be the most useful to quickly compensate for headphone's weak spots, but they appear to do similar stuff what Equalizer does otherwise.

However, this card seems to lack power compared to a computer's usual analog output - everything sounds quieter through it (my headphones are 32 Ohms), lacking that last bit of volume at the max level which makes a difference in some voice calls and music scenarios. Maybe that's by design, due to the limited power supplied via USB...

The software is a bit glitchy, because Smart Volume seem to mess with regular volume settings, resulting in quieter than usual sound when the sound card is unplugged.

Overall, I don't regret that I bought it ($22), the lower volume is a bit of a bummer but you are getting a great quality sound for a low price.

I have 3 PCs at my desk and haven't found a KVM switch that I like for a reasonable price. Instead, I have my keyboard, mouse, and this USB audio DAC adapter plugged in to a USB 2.0 hub. My desk speakers are then plugged in to this USB audio adapter. I simply plug the USB hub in to the front usb port of the computer I am using at the time. I don't switch often and only have 1 PC on at the same time (one PC is my main, one is dedicated to classic PC games, and the 3rd is the one I run through my TV in the same room). All PCs connect video output directly to my monitor's inputs.

I installed the recommended software on each PC and set the settings to be the same for all PCs. The sound quality is excellent on each one!!! I like to listen to rock music through this USB sound card and I can't tell a difference between this USB adapter and the built-in sound output in my motherboard. I was originally planning to use the DAC built in my monitor but it output really poor quality sound (embarrassingly bad for LG to have used such a poor DAC).

Overall, a 5 star product and I wish I'd have found it sooner.

The Play! X3 is exactly what I wanted it to be so I am happy but I acknowledge my use case is probably different than the average user so this might not be helpful.

I recently moved over to a proper audio stack from my Sound Blaster X4, as I used none of the gaming features that it provided, and lost the microphone input I was using. I tried using the microphone input on my motherboard but I had to use an extension cable to get it where I wanted it to be which acted like an antenna and picked up too much electromagnetic interference which manifested in a hum / hissing noise. I needed a usb microphone input that could be plugged in on my desk circumventing the need for an extension. I looked at all the usb options to add a microphone input and this was the only one that said it supports 24 bit 48khz and I know all my Sound Blasters in the past have supported stereo microphone input so I bought this in hopes that this one did as well.

Well, this was exactly what I wanted and at $25 it was only slightly more expensive than the other options which didn't seem as good. I plugged this into my keyboard and plugged my microphone into it and without the need for extra software it supports my microphone at stereo 24 bit 48khz - it is everything I want it to be. Just to note why I didn't go for the Play! X4 is because it only has one input which means I'd have to get an adapter that splits trrs into two trs ports which just adds another layer of complexity to something that I want to be as simple as possible. Also, I don't ever see myself using this as a DAC as I have much better ones so I won't be using all the fancy features of the X4.

TL;DR It is a good plug and play usb microphone port supporting stereo 24 bit 48khz input so I am happy with it.

Excellent Easy Upgrade for Virtually any Computer

Instead of purchasing a PCIe sound card for a desktop computer, I decided to try this on my older Dell Precision notebook (with Windows 10 Installed) - I saved lots of space on my desk. It is a night & day improvement from integrated audio.

The sound quality is as impressive as other premium desktop sound cards I used. It comes with a USB-C to USB type A (traditional rectangle port) adapter and can be used on a USB 2.0 port.

This is a plug&play device for Windows, meaning there is no headache with software installation and configuration (other than the possible switching the sound devices on Windows Options). There is an app for this device, but I have not bothered to use it because it works without any issues whatsoever.

I am currently using Samsung's earphones with mic and control buttons; I can pause & play music and change the volume on Windows 10 using my earphones through this excellent gadget.

Using this on my Samsung Galaxy S9 works excellent and the buttons do work, albeit with lower volume than the original headphone jack, but still can be increased enough for me to enjoy.

If you do not plan to use surround sound, then this is an excellent upgrade that is easily transferrable to other computers and smartphones.
