Chalk Lettering 101
Chalk lettering has gained popularity in recent years as a fun way to communicate a message by making creative signage for home and business use. With a little practice, you’ll be lettering like a pro in no time. The best thing about working in chalk? It’s easy to erase and start over if you make a mistake!
Drop caps are the large letters often found at the beginning of a book chapter. Traditional drop caps are ornate; however, modern drop caps can be stylized anyway you like, as long as the letter is recognizable. Try practicing these letters to get your chalk-lettering juices flowing!
Mix Fonts like a Pro
The basic font groups are: serif, sans serif, script and decorative. There are no hard-and-fast rules for combining fonts, and most artists have their own favorite combinations. Here are some examples for mixing and matching fonts.
Negative space is the area around a word or an object. The effect creates powerful works of art that stand out! To create a negative-space illumination, ink the outlines of a favorite quote; then sketch an image in the space around it. Add color!
Stippling is a technique that involves drawing or painting small dots to create detail and depth. Stippling is perfect when using pen and ink, but it is just as fun to use in hand lettering for a really cool effect!
Design a fun and kitschy chalkboard work of art for your kitchen! You can use anything for the board, from a silly phrase and a recipe to a simple illustration. This one features a coffee theme.

Julie Manwaring has long loved the whimsical, rhythmic beauty found in the repeating letterforms and flourishes of calligraphy. Her custom hand-lettering and illustration studio, Flourish & Whim, grew out of this love for letters and passion for art. Julie's styles are a unique blend of classic and modern - the perfectly imperfect ups and downs, swirls, and undulations create a graceful dance of words. Hailing from the Northeast, Julie currently lives in San Francisco with her family of three. When not in the studio, she can be found swinging at the playground with her son, strolling through the neighborhood fabric shop, or in the kitchen combining efforts with her husband on a new pizza recipe. Shauna Lynn Panczyszyn is a hand-lettering artist and illustrator located in Orlando, Florida. After graduating from the University of North Florida with a Bachelor of Arts, she interned at a local advertising agency, where her love of hand lettering and illustration was fostered and encouraged. Now a full-time freelance illustrator, Shauna has an unhealthy obsession with typography and is quick to point out awesome lettering and packaging examples to her friends and family, who thankfully put up with her quirkiness. She loves to create side projects based around lettering, such as her Three Word Stories project and positive quotes. Shauna works out of her home studio with her puppy, Teddy. I've purchased both the kit and the full-length book. As for the kit contents, you get a (too small) 5 x 7 inch chalk board, a small easel that's perfect for displaying the chalk board with whatever project you've been working on, two white chalk pencils (too waxy to be much good for anything), and 5 notecards with envelopes.
My tinted and white charcoal pencils work better on the included chalk board than the pencils included in this kit, but real chalk - the kind used in schools or on your child's chalk boards - is better yet... And, of course no chalk is provided in the kit.
Each note card has one of five basic designs, to which you could add details or lettering. There's also a fine line marking pen that you can use with the note cards to add details or writing. The marker isn't much good for calligraphy purposes though. For that, you'd need to purchase calligraphy pens or markers that are not part of the kit.
The projects in the book may not be all that interesting in and of themselves, but the projects do contain pointers and tips for using chalk that you might not have thought of... so the book is educational, at least.
Update: 29 October, 2017 I received a free sample of Cretacolor White chalk pencil. This chalk pencil works much better on the chalkboard included in this kit than the pencils included by the publisher. Cretacolor Chalk Pencil 3pk - White Soft
