Design
The Zen sports a 2.5-inch TFT color display with 320 x 240-pixel resolution and support for up to 16.7 million colors. This razor sharp display is packaged in a device that weighs just 2.1 ounces and measures 3.26 x 2.16 x .44 inches (W x H x D). The internal battery powers the Zen for up to 25 hours of continuous audio playback and up to five hours of continuous video playback. Use the Zen's SD slot to expand your portable media library with music, photos and videos stored on your SD card. There's also a handy built-in microphone for capturing notes on the go.

Features
Load up up your favorite songs, as well as your album art, and get going with the Zen. The device supports iTunes Plus tracks from the iTunes store and MP3 and WMA tracks. This was my first MP3 player. I prefer it over the Ipod, as the Zen has a permanent 'sleep timer' feature. The Ipod's 'sleep timer' has to be reset every single time. The interface is simple and intuitive. I have tried other mp3 players over the years, but keep coming back to the Creative Zen. The basic Zen is wonderful. They keep trying to 'improve' it, but all they do is add features. If I want all those features, I can just use my phone. Tell the company to not fiddle with a good product.

The player is very good. The reason they lost one star from me was their exaggerated advertisement stating that the battery life between recharges is 30 hours of audio. My testing with the "Lock" feature enabled which causes the screen to go black to save power, lasts approximately 15 hours. The 30 hour time frame was a selling pitch for me. The upside is it does charge up quickly.

Another problem I experienced is if you are an audio book/podcaster the unit does not remember where you left off if you jump to another program. The Bookmark function is very impractical. It would have been better for the manufacturer to have programmed a memory mark so you can pick up where you last left off.

Now, the positives. The screen is really nice. If you are a video watcher this is like a tiny HDTV. The 32GB which comes out to about 29GB is far sufficient for my several thousand songs and several dozen podcasts, and several audio books! It is great to have access to so much media for whatever my mood is looking for.

The formatting is much like iTunes in that everything is dumped into a master play list. From there, if you want to organize it to your liking you must go into their included PC software and create "Playlists." The software is very easy to use. Using Windows Explorer to perform the same process will crash your unit. The good news is thers is a reset button which only resets the firmware and does not dump the memory.

The unit does organize to some degree based on the tags of the media. However, I have found some crazy correlations between the song and the album picture displayed. The display does provide enough room for you to read the title and artist. Again, it is a very nice display.

The unit is very light in weight. And it is about as big as my credit card. However, the thickness is about as thick as 6 stacked credit cards.

The USB connection is not propeitary; which is awesome. You do not need to have the manufacturer's cable to interact with the unit like the other manufacturers require. And it also has expandable memory if you need it. However, the firmware does recognize this as another source and will not integrate with the media lists you have on the HD. You will need to refer to the Disk if you want to access its media. I am sure you can configure it through the PC software to integrate. Because of the immense size of the HD I have had the need yet to try it.

I do recommend this unit!

Cell phone charger (Motorola) is compatible: I'm in Love!

This thing rocks! I spent months reading reviews and finding the perfect device. This comes very close. It won out over the Cowon D2, and Sansa View. The Archos Wifi, iRiver, and iPoo-don't-Touch won't expand w/ SD cards, so are eliminated (says the apple-phobe.) Battery life also sucked.

The Cowon D2 was a sure winner at first, but what sold me about the Zen was the ability to read m3u's and make playlists. Navigating 16 gigs of music will be nearly impossible without this. In addition superior bookmarking capabilities and the ability to navigate 2-hour long audiobooks sold me on the Zen. It was hard to turn down Cowon's OGG-FLAC-APE capabilities, it's WMA voice recording, and it's TV-out port. They both have amazing sound quality.

The Sansa View had the advantage of durability, integration of SD mini card files into regular interface, and great customer service from Sandisk. I had an e280 before and the interface, which is virtually the same, is very basic; only allowing you to choose by Album, Artist, Genre and so on. The sound was good, not "amazing," and I could USUALLY here audiobooks over subway noise. Reviews say video watching stinks. No bookmarking for audiobooks--they told me 5 years ago they were working on this! Boooooooooo, Sandisk.

Finally, I had a nice surprise when my Zen arrived: it is compatible with my Motorola cell phone AC power adapter! I have the Razr V3m but I think all Motorola's use the same. It is 5.0v and I looked around on the Web to make sure the Zen takes 5.0v as well. Indeed they do. Try this Superior C. Car / Wall Charger for Motorola KRZR Q RAZR SLVR

Bonus: the USB mini cord that comes with the Zen is compatible with the cell phone too! I found shareware syncing software for my phone here [...] and now I can sync contacts and calendars with Outlook for both my cell phone and my Zen. Ha Ha! (Also see Motorola's Website.)

I love mine so much I have named her Izzy. Her black shiny finish matches perfectly with my new HP Pavillion Notebook, which I named Isabella. (Bella means beautiful in Italian.)

UPDATE: Most mini USB AC adapters and cables (make sure it's mini) should work. I have seen a review or two of some generics that don't though. The Motorola adapters work great.

**Also, MediaMonkey is the best syncing software for ANY player. The tagging features are simply awesome, and it saves the Zen's customizations and settings for when you need to reset and format. Oh me, oh my!

I use this exclusively for listening to recorded books, and the single most important feature for that is to be able to quickly stop and start the story without losing your place. The power/hold button is a slide switch on the end of the player right next to the headphone jack so you can shut it down quickly even through your clothing or while wearing gloves. If you have a phone call or some one wants to talk to you it only takes about a second to stop the player. This is something that fancy new players with touch screens fail to do.

I have preset my radio stations. I have put music on it. I haven't put photos or movies on it yet, but soon I will. So far, I have had little difficulty programming the player. The only thing that I switched out were the headphones because they kept slipping out of my ears. I bought a set of ear buds and now I'm perfectly happy with my Zen.
