This was/is a replacement card. I had a SIIG card in my desktop, but I wanted something a little older and better for Win7. I like the Creative brand and this card caught my attention. Win7 detects it, and I had the drivers preloaded, so installation was a breeze. Currently I am looking for the head unit for the card.. I have some ideas in mind. On he gaming side of this card, the gaming effects are crisp and clean. No problems with audio/video output and have been decoding for digital mp4 transfers to cassette tapes...(cause I can)...no problems with wave synth; all 48 MIDI channels work successfully. Noise level is nominal with no distortion. Currently working on sub 5.1 playback. with software enhancement. This is a 2.1 soundfont supported card. If it works on Win7, it will work on Win8. I AM LOOKING FOR THE HEAD UNIT FOR THIS CARD. Thank you and hope this helps.

Could get it to work only with the driver that came on the CD that came with the first SB0090 I ever purchased (color-coded jacks, in the early 2000s). Without any further installations of driver updates, etc., to get it (the non colored version) to play Youtube videos I must set hardware acceleration to None, or one tick to the right of the None. Recording via What U Hear results with very low amplitude. To make the recorded files comfortably useable I raise their amplitude by adding 35 db (in the audio recording/editing software). I had just ordered a colored version of the card (jacks are color-coded). Once it arrives I'll be able to tell whether it works without these two problems.

After short time, a serious problem arised. The computer was getting reset in the middle of playing sessions. The non-OEM (brass color jacks) is no longer in my computer. I had to lower my rating to two stars

On Linux, gotta know how to set it up

The card works fine. But on Linux, you're going to have to know how to set it up. Creative Labs' site didn't help; it assumes Windows(tm).

I'll give you the outlines of the setup: Get a soundfont installer and at least one general soundfont. Under Debian Linux, aptitude will find you the installer, but the only soundfont that aptitude automatically knows about is somewhat incomplete. Arrange to load the soundfont every time you boot up. Myself, I use Rosegarden which makes that easy; otherwise, you might have to experiment with init files.
