Quite good for the size -3dB point was 78Hz

Quite good for the size -3dB point was 78Hz
Rather than follow the trend I actually tested the frequency response at 1 meter on a flat surface as it would typically be used. This was measured and plotted from deep bass at 20Hz up to the highest treble at 20KHz.Typically the real response of speakers is greatly inflated by manufacturers and testing methods are not disclosed since the distance to walls, floors and other factors affects the results a lot.Overall, this one is fine.Considering it's small size and the limits of physics, it does quite a good job. There’s plenty of full and clear sound with fairly accurate bass hitting the main bass guitar notes and clear vocals adequate for small to medium sized rooms at 90 – 102dBC with no issue. If levels were higher it gets hard to talk anyway.Outdoor parties or any setting needing higher levels will need something larger of course.During testing I ran the driver around 50 - 75% of it's excursion limits. The main downside (if any) is that it's not a durable design meant to be thrown in a bag or taken to the beach. It's solid construction but the components would get damaged. It's meant to set on a shelf or table and that's where it stays. It’s also a single point, not 2 traditional speakers 10-20 feet apart for stereo imaging. It’s clearly stereo but even with effects, it’s not going to have a lot of channel separation. The frequency response tested fairly flat from 78Hz up to 17Khz which is higher than many people can hear.Using the average level from 100Hz and 1Khz signals as a baseline I did measurements with a calibrated test microphone which is flat from 5Hz - 20Khz +-0.5dB with a calibration file loaded. With 100dB as a 0dB reference, bass extension results were fine:-3dB 78Hz - this is the half power point. It's fine.-6dB 75Hz-10dB 72Hz-20dB 64Hz pretty much no signal here. This is visible on the test result photos I added.Fundamental and 2nd order harmonic distortion remained below 1% at all frequencies from 200Hz – 10Khz. Below that we’re pushing the tiny woofers beyond a linear range trying to hit low notes and they pretty much do it. I concentrated on low notes in some testing as the midrange is clear, and FAR easier for any speaker to do anyway. But for low notes, each octave we go down gets 2x harder to hit requiring far more energy and air displacement.Having a bass discussion on something this small is almost funny, but it's not bad actually. The overall system resonance of the cabinet + drivers with passive radiators is around 76Hz.That is the most accurate note with low distortion where the passive radiator is effortlessly contributing output for free, and that’s also why it can’t hit anything below that note. Same physics we see in normal ported speaker systems. They simply don’t operate below the tuning frequency of the bass port or passive radiator. As is, they choose the drivers and tuning carefully to do all it can for the size.Creative did their homework to get quite a bit out of a tiny structure while using an onboard DSP /amp to manage the crossover points matched to the drivers as well as they can. There's a lot of misinformation these days from informal tests posted on youtub e since cell phones can play a sine wave. They play it, turn it up by 10X for certain notes that didn't work and when they get some faint noise at 40Hz and claim it did the tone. Nope. Artificially turning up certain notes is cheating and defeating the test.Yes, some bass output (noise actually) may be audible on a really low test tone.Noise + distortion is NOT the original test tone or even useful.Test notes below the cabinet tuning frequency are typically out of phase with the original signal anyway which doesn't add to the output in a useful way.Summary:This small speaker tries really hard. There is no big peaks or dips and there’s useful output down to around 78Hz.There's even a little at 66Hz but that’s getting out of phase with the primary output and barely audible anyway. There was 1 peak with some distortion at 2.5Khz, which may be tweeter resonance or some aspect of the crossover. That’s normal, no one makes a flat driver or crossover at any size. This is a fine little speaker.
