From the Manufacturer

Bi-Amplified Design: Two Amps, Not One

Most portable speakers utilize a single amplifier to reproduce the entire audio spectrum. With a single amplifier design, much demand goes into reproducing the lows and mids, which compromises the delivery of the highs. On the other hand, the Sound Blaster Roar utilizes two amplifiers – one dedicated to driving lows and mids, while another which is solely dedicated to deliver the high frequencies. This allows the speaker to produce uncompromisingly clear, high definition, and well-balanced music. The top-firing bass and mid-level driver is also laid horizontally, reducing the speaker’s center of gravity, thus stabilizing it.

I've come to heavily rely on Amazon reviews, and base purchasing decisions around those reviews.
I purchased the New Creative Sound Blaster Roar about 1 month ago on the basis of outstanding reviews. It was returned because the Bluetooth dropped - even at close range. But apart from my experience (which I consider an individual unit flaw) I want to address the larger issue of the unit's sound quality in view of the effusive reviews.

The audio quality was OK - not great. My sister has an older first generation Bose Soundlink - which is better than the Roar (and to be fair twice as expensive). Admittedly, it is in different price range; I mention it because there have been many wild comparisons to other products Bose Soundlink (not just the mini), Bose wave radio, $30,000 stereo systems, etc, .... The Roar's audio quality was dependent on location - moving slightly off-axis changed the sound. Was the Roar's sound quality terrible - no. Was it good yes - I'd say even quite good. Was it "audiophile quality" no..... not even close.

But there are so many breathless reviews throwing around terms like "best bluetooth speaker ever" "masterpiece" "audiophile." I would urge caution on buying on the basis of these reviews.

Many of the glowing reviews have coincided with the reviewer obtaining a free Sound Blaster Roar - and while many reviewers candidly acknowledge that fact, I think many more have not. When I received my Roar, I believe there were 100 or so reviews - now about 1 month later - there are 511. One reviewer commented: "Creative has a promotion going on now. Write a review for the sound blaster roar on amazon and get a free carry bag for the roar.

I spent a GOOD chunk of a day doing research for a portable speaker under $200. After all my research it came down to the: Creative Roar, UE Boom, Bose Soundlink Mini, Sony SRSX5. I bought all 4 to compare. I can't stand reviews where they compare in store and don't actually buy the product and take it home to test. What I learned is none of them are perfect and they all have flaws so it depends on your use. I created a chart below for each. Keep in mind I am no audiophile, I am just an average consumer sharing their honest opinion.

Creative Roar

Pros: Great mids and highs, the bass is good enough to get your heading bobbing but for those looking for Beats type of Bass you will need to look elsewhere. I still think the bass is best on the roar compared to the other 3 though. Especially with the "Terabass" feature and the " Roar" feature. Amazing features, of which half you will never use. Cheapest option. Best overall in my opinion except....

Cons: This was a deal breaker for me. When you connect via bluetooth there is a very noticeable white noise ( static noise ) when no audio is being played. At very low volumes it most apparent. When I listen to podcasts I constantly hear the noise. Apparently it is a common issue with these, creative has a thread online. I know there can me white noise from any speaker but this one was very annoying because it was so prominent. That being said at mid-high volumes you will not be able to notice a thing. I ordered two just to make sure I did not get a lemon, however it was just as bad. I also tested it outside away from all my indoor electronics to see if anything was interfering, however to no dice.

Soundlink Mini

Pros: Best overall sound in terms of clarity for all ranges.

The speaker, just like the original, sounds phenomenal, and it is that quality audio along with the numerous functional features that distinguishes this speaker from just another Bluetooth sound device. The Sound Blaster Roar 2 is 20% smaller and 10% lighter than the original, but this is a re-configuration rather than a completely new design – a refinement rather than a new speaker.

The original is a speaker that I still use every day. This new configuration keeps the same drivers, amplifiers and ports but re-arranges them within a smaller case impressively not only maintaining the stellar sound, but improving upon it. The battery size also remains the same so playing time has not been reduced.

In this re-arrangement more directional sound is created because all five speaker drivers face in the same direction, up when laid flat, forward when set upright. I played both Roars side-by-side at top volume, and the new, smaller Roar 2 was clearly louder and more balanced when in the upright position with all five drivers aimed at the listener. Even when both units were lying flat, the Roar 2 seemed to be slightly louder. And, the addition of side patricians (radiators) that vibrate with pulsing bass from the subwoofer provides a visual and audio release that adds another dimension -- an improvement over the original fixed grills.

To begin, the User Manual states that when the unit arrives the battery should be charged for three hours, which I did in spite of the three charging lights glowing steady, indicating a fully charged battery. Initial break-in of rechargeable batteries often determines their future optimal performance so I follow manufacturer recommendations.
