KEVIN KRUSE, NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR
"The creative process can be challenging to teach, systematize, and study. For many of us the process of developing a concept, making it tangible, and narrating its story is extremely personal. In the "Creativity Code," Alex Gore delicately introduce the complexities of the design process in a straight-forward, coherent, manner. A thought provoking read for the most veteran creatives to the beginners."
Jeffrey A. Pinheiro, AIA: Architect studio.bad architects
"From proportion and scale to sustainable chicken coop and a "skyscraper that grows," Alex Gore and Lance Cayko take you on a wild journey through antiquity to the modern day in search of the key to creativity. Anyone wanting to unleash their maximum creativity would do well to study The Creativity Code. "
ENOCH SEARS, AIA: Architect BUSINESS OF ARCHITECTURE
From the Author
Architecture firms were not hiring, the economy was nowhere near booming, and I needed to make a living. Lance Cayko, my current business partner, was in the same position as I was with two children to feed. Needless to say, we needed to be Creative.
We decided to start our own architecture firm. Seven years later we have grown our business 300%,been published in magazines around the world, were featured on an HGTV show, and won an international architecture award.
Most importantly we started teaching what we have learned online and in two different departments at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Not only has this been an exciting experience, it has also helped us sharpen our own skills. This book aims to pass on the crucial lessons we learned in the most practical way we have discovered.

The book is easy to read and provides some good nuggets of wisdom. Here are a few of my favorites:
“Creativity has a strong backbone in rationality.”
“Spend time making sure you’re solving the correct problem."
“Rules and systems can be freeing if used correctly. If you understand the principles behind the rules you will know why, when, and if to break them.”
“Creativity is like solving a puzzle… the key... is creating a compelling image in your mind of the final result... then developing a filter to find the right pieces that fit your image.”
The book is divided into four parts.
- Introduction: What is Creativity?
This chapter is a good primer on what it means to be creative, who can be creative, and lays the groundwork for the internal journey that this book is.
- 1. Creative Principles
- 2. Rational Principles
- 3. The Design Process
This section provides the framework for the creativity thinking process. I found myself relating these concepts to my own life experiences.
- 4. The Roost: The Self-Sustaining Chicken Coop.
- 5. Atlas: The Transforming Tiny House
- 6. What if a Building Could Grow? The Skyscraper that Feeds, Waters Itself and Cleans the Air.
This chapter started to solidify the concepts in my mind. It showcased some really amazing designs that push the envelope and sparked a curiosity in architecture.
- 7. The Checklist
- 8. The Checkup
- 9. The Secret
Often we are our own worst enemy. We fail to do what we say, forget our aim, or lose track of our real goal. This section saves us from ourselves.
Appendix, This is part four for me.
- A. Sketching
- B. Constructing Design
Execution is a function of your skill level. Often I find books that have great ideas, but little practical or a procedure to implement what has been explained. This book is the opposite of that. It provides hands-on training to help you execute and bring your ideas to life.
Overall, The Creativity Code helps drag your ideas out of the dark shadows of your mind and shows you how to start acting on them. I highly recommended this book as a kick starter for your imagination.
After, he lays the groundwork and the motivation, the book goes on to outline ways to organize your creative ideas into an action plan. I appreciate this because it shows how a creative person needs to have a framework to accomplish their goals and what exactly that framework is. Having the checklists and action plans enforces the concept that creative ideas are not just born, but worked on. This is a superb book for anyone who wants to put the effort in to make their ideas realized!
