To complete the project: You get a large piece of fleece with slits cut in it, then you get many long strips of brightly colored fleece that you weave through. I had 2 extra strips, which is nice, since I'd wondered about loosing one. The slits are precise and something that sets this apart from other fleece blanket kits is that this would be very hard to cut on your own, as opposed to blanket kits where you knot together squares using a cut fringe. I could cut a fringe, but no way at all could I measure and cut exact slits to let me weave in strips. I couldn't make this kit. Then the ends of each strip has a small cut so that you can thread another strip through it, and you finish the edge by looping one through the other. This is basically the same as a chain stitch in crochet. And instructions were easy to follow. At the end, you attach a "Made By" tag and write in your name with a permanent marker, and you make pompoms for the corners and sides. I feel like some crafty kids would be really into the chain stitch pattern of finishing the edges, and the making pompoms part. It those are both things they could do with other material, like yarn, and so could take the skill and play with it.
Polar fleece is a fabric that doesn't fray on cuts, so good for easy crafting, and I have several polar fleece blankets with yardage from the fabric store. I'd thought this blanket kit had thinner polar fleece, but when I went and compared it, I think it's average. I feel like the blanket came out looking darker than the picture. The dark blue background keeps it toned down. It looks fine.
If giving as a gift, it's nice to gift the kit to a crafty older elementary or younger middler schooler. Also, could be good for something like a girls night keeping your hands busy thing. The finished blanket is a lap blanket size (about 60 by 40 inches). It's big enough two people can easily weave into it at the same time. Not big for more than three people at once. The finished blanket could be a nice throw. It looks cheery and nice, but really the act of making it is best.
Took maybe a couple of hours to make, so it's an evening project and not a full day project (for an adult). For a younger child, it might be a multiple session type project.
But make no mistake...this is a craft thing. It's not going to be a down comforter. It's not a Woobie. It's a rather thin blanket that works more for appearance than utility. Because of the materials I was also concerned about long term, or even short term, durability. It seems to me the cuts can tear more easily than they should, and for a younger kid this may be an issue.
So again - I like the idea, and I like the looks of the final product. I wish it were a bit thicker so it could be used instead of looked at, so primarily this is a crafty pastime and not something that will get one a warm, thick, fuzzy blanket.
