Apart from that, this cutter did a good job of keeping the wine bottle steady during cutting. Other thing to note is that pushing the blade down is a bit difficult as it cuts into your finger. We ended up using a cork to push the cutter down.
I honestly got better results out of the 18 dollar bottle cutter I bought 4 years ago.
I was super excited to get this after seeing the reviews. I saw the first red flag when I opened the box and saw the instructions. The very first thing you read is an extortion of a 5 star review in exchange for another "free" sanding stone. My heart sank when I read that, but decided to ignore it and start cutting bottles.
The first one cut pretty uneven. The metal tracks the bottle rests on will slide back and forth pretty easily, so you really have to be careful and put slight pressure sideways as you push - however, not too much because the plastic base will flex a little and cause wobble. I then scored two more wine bottles that came out straighter - the third looked damn near perfect. Finally, I scored a fairly thick vodka bottle and proceeded to give all the bottles the hot/cold water method...
As you can see by the photos, not one single success. Using the cheaper bottle cutter gave me about 3 out of 4 success rate.
Perhaps others have had better success than I have with this thing, but I would take the 5 star reviews with a grain of salt.
For those who have never cut bottles, all you are doing is scoring the bottle. Once scored, you alternate hot and cold and the bottle will separate along the scored line. I prefer hot water from an electric kettle, then dunk in an ice bucket. The silicone rings are meant to go around your score line so the water stays isolated to the score line.
It is definitely easier to score round bottles, but this is the 1st I've seen for square/rectangular/oval bottle. If you are only looking to cut round bottles, there are cheaper options.Ephrem's Original Bottle Cutter Kit is only $30ish and this is what I've used for most of my cuts. Kinkajou Bottle Cutter is also cheaper, but I found it more time consuming (when you're cutting dozens of bottles at a time) because leveling it is an issue.Kinkajou Bottle Cutter-Black
