This book is really three stories intertwined with each other, using the Chihuahuas as the glue that holds them together. The author does a very good job of not getting preachy on the prepping bit or the conservative ideology and keeping the lovingly intense descriptions of weaponry and hardware to a minimum. The action moves right along, the "good guys" are likeable and the bad guys are bad and the zombies wind up dead, dead, d-e-d dead...in more ways that you can count. I became alarmed a couple times when it seemed as if he was going to drift off into the standard "liberals are lazy and want the government to take care of them because they can't do it for themselves" cant that you get in prepper/TEOTWAWKI/WTSHTF novels, but he pulled up on that and even came up with alternate explanations for why certain characters acted certain ways.
I thank him for not using the Chihuahuas as comedic foils or for making them more than what they are either. They are tough little dogs who are pretty darned smart and resourceful. Both my guys are smart and brave and can do more than most people give them credit for, so needless to say, I loved the dogs' part in the story..
All in all, I would give this book a five star rating except for one thing: I want the author to go back, flesh this story out a bit more, develop the plot lines a little more and add to it. IOW, the book was TOO DARNED SHORT! I didn't want it to end that fast, because I was enjoying that much. All in all, a terrific book.
