The best story in the group is "Ruby in the Mist", and to be honest, it was the only one that I kept going back to and wondering about, because I liked how she told it and then hooked it around at the end. I was not expecting it. I wanted to know if it was an accident or if the brother knew what would happen when he took the POV character to see his sister.
The "devil as daughter" one would have been a second-best, but they lost me in the middle of the story. The end had a definite punch, but more sad than scary.
"Grandpa's Old Dog" was a funny one in a "get what you deserve" sort of way, but it was more punishment for the POV character rather than the prson it happened to - who seemed like he STILL didn't understand what she was trying to tell him.
The zombie stories were par for the course, but zombies aren't really my thing. The Mandy White one had a good moment but it was pretty obvious what would happen.
The boogeyman story was okay, but a little more ick factor than I really wanted.
The diner story was a huge disappointment because I thought what would happen was pretty well telegraphed from when they walk into the diner, and the family never suffers any fear or dread, which takes the punch out of the story. It's been done, and better (and I have driven that stretch of highway he refers to).
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys short stories and anything...well...off kilter. This ain't your momma's horror but you will OMG! ERMAGERD! and maybe even LOL! Reader beware...it's creepy...
Reading this book reminded me of my old childhood fears, then gave me some new ones to boot.
One thing I highly suggest after reading this delightful book of chilling tales; don't get off the bed!
