Warren has finally broken the barrier. Sure, the art and stories have always been on the cutting edge of outlandishness but starting with this archive, anything goes. Issue 64 has a fan letter printed in it that is long and contains many opinions regarding the state of Warren magazines at the time. This was the first time I have seen a fan letter printed with vulgarity in it. Archie Goodwin wrote a long rebuttal to that letter. This letter touched off a firestorm that culminated in Issue 67's letters pages to be devoted to the discussion of this letter. Warren publishing declares their mission statement and come hell or high water, they will follow through with it. This archive has some good things about it. All 5 covers are well done. Issue 64 depicts "The Decaying Man" done by Todd & Bode. This is truly a repulsive looking cover (couldn't have been that bad as Warren marketed it as a T-shirt). It's horrible but it's great art. The remaining covers are done by Ken Kelly, another gifted artist from the Frank Frazetta school. The inside covers of Uncle Creepy are drawn by Bernie Wrightson and I must say Uncle Creepy had never looked as sinister as he does here. Compare these depictions to the way Uncle Creepy was drawn back in the day and you will notice the change from cartoonish to maturity and graphic art. Issue 64 is a theme issue. All Warren had was an awesome cover but no story to go with it. What we got were many stories using the cover as the focus. Another theme issue was Issue #68 which is a Christmas issue. Overall, I felt that where this archive suffered a little bit was in great stories but there are a lot of good stories to satisfy the fan base. Note that the cover of Issue 67 previews the story "Bowser". Bowser never made the issue! Don't worry folks, Bowser ends up finishing off the archive and this being a Rich Corben color story, you know it's going to spark some emotion. Yes, Creepy has moved on to adulthood and Warren will tell about the world's horrible truths and depict things that have happened and things that could happen. Enjoy this archive!

This volume highlights Creepy at its best period: 1971-1975. Definitely one of the better volumes. The best being Archive 13-17, in my opinion. I mainly like the more dark and gruesome creepy stories.

What more could Warren offer??? Wrightson, Corben, Sanjulian, Bode, Sutton and company in Color!!!
These exreme highs would be maintained for a good 5 years, and then Wrightson and Corben went to Heavy Metal.
But for these few incredible years, fans were treated to the best in horror / fantasy comics there ever was (Heavy Metal was more impressive in a lot of ways, but my vote went to the Warren Magazines).
And the grotesque headshot painting (by Bode) on the first cover of the anthology should have gotten the dust jacket, but the Sanjulian cover is pretty cool so I'm not complaining.
The best Creepy anthology yet.

Corben Wrightson Sutton Cole Sanjulian Bode all add up to the best in illustrated horror and fantasy ever.
In a hardcover volume with printing standards that the magazine never saw .
Just buy it and see what these guys did back in '74.
You'll be amazed.
