The Cremo Cream Story: Like most shavers, inventor and Stanford University Engineering graduate Mike Boone was not that satisfied with the dozens of shave creams he had tried over the years. He kept getting annoying little cuts and was left with rough, agitated skin after each shave. He learned most shave "creams" and "gels" are actually foam - which is primarily air. He also observed that high-end shave lotions claim to contain exotic ingredients that sound appealing, but are in such small quantities that they simply do not have significant physical benefits. The solution, Cremo Cream, has no air and no trace ingredients. It's a rich cream made only from significant, noticeably beneficial ingredients. It contains very unique, super-lubricating, highly-slippery molecules that have been specially compounded with other truly powerful skin conditioners. Together, they make your blade glide smoothly over your skin like an ice skate; they make your hairs stick out and stand up straight so your blade cuts them more deeply; and they nourish and moisturize your skin. Your skin will look and feel astonishingly soft and smooth. Your shave will last longer. Better than anything else you have ever used. Each tube is highly concentrated for a sixty day supply.

Directions For A Dream Shave: Rub your skin with the hottest water you can stand for 30 seconds (in the shower works best or use a hot towel). Leave your skin wet, as Cremo Cream is water-activated. Lightly coat your skin with an "almond-sized" squeeze of cream. Less is often best! Add a few drops of water to make and keep it slippery, the shave. If the razor clogs, use more water or less Cremo Cream.

A few years ago, I discovered the benefits of traditional wetshaving. The use of a brush and good shaving cream greatly enhances a shave. I also get a much better shave with a traditional double-edge razor (I use a closed-comb Merkur HD) than with any of the heavily-marketed, but less effective, "modern" razors. Shaving the "old-fashioned" way results in a closer shave, with less irritation, and ultimately at lower cost when compared with the ridiculous multi-bladed razors in their flashy packages. "Modern" razors are a complete rip-off, nothing more than a marketing scheme that the razor companies devised to make more money when they realized that a good DE razor never needs to be replaced. (I actually have a few older razors from the 1910s that still give a good shave--and the blades are quite inexpensive compared to the multi-blade cartridge abominations.)

I have experimented with several different brands of shaving cream. My favorite is George F. Trumper's (especially the lime, but the sandalwood and violet are nice too), but Proraso creams are also excellent and inexpensive. All of these are VASTLY superior to any of the air-filled canned creams and lousy gels that most people use these days. I will never go back to Gillette gel and Barbasol foam.

I happened across Cremo here on Amazon and thought I'd give it a try. At first, I didn't realize that this was designed to be a BRUSHLESS cream, and tried it with my usual brush and bowl technique. It did not work well with a brush at all. The cream is not designed to lather, and using a brush to try to make a lather ruins the persistent slickness of the cream. I was regretting my purchase of the 3-pack until the next shave, when I actually followed the package directions and used the cream without a brush.

Without a brush, Cremo actually works quite well. A small amount (about the size of an almond) is adequate to cover the face. I shave in the shower after washing with hot water, although washing in the sink would probably be fine. The cream has an odd persistence on the skin; the skin remains lubricated even after a pass with the razor, unlike traditional creams. While shaving, the cream that remains on one's hand can easily be redistributed over the face, so that every stroke with the razor is well-lubricated. I shave with the grain first, then rinse, reapply cream, and shave again against the grain.

For me, Cremo on its own works almost as well as traditional cream with a brush. I like the exfoliating action of a brush and still prefer shaving that way. But Cremo is a nice alternative, and lately I have been using it instead. I like the Creamsicle-like scent, and will probably continue to include this cream in my rotation. It also would make a good travel cream for those who do not have, or do not wish to purchase, a travel shaving brush. It also might work as the base for a superlather, for those who want to take the time to shave that way.

Whether you use a brushless cream like this or a traditional cream or soap with a brush, you will get a much better shave than canned cream can provide. If you haven't ever shaved this way, Google search "Today Show shaving" and read the article entitled "How to get that perfect shave". Once you try it, you will never want to shave another way again.

Cremo is terrific, as many reviewers have said. Let me add a couple of points I have not seen in other reviews.

First, it gives a great shave. I've had a tough beard since I was a teenager. In my twenties and thirties I needed to shave twice per day. To this day I have no choice but to shave with a "blood cut". This is a term I heard a barber use to describe shaving with the grain of the beard and then against it. I've tried foams, gels, and now creams. Creams are the best because they have the least amount of air, allowing them to rub into the skin and beard better than the others. Cremo is the best cream I've tried because it seems to soften my beard better and it is the best at lubricating my skin and the blade.

The idea that a small amount of cream is better than lots of foam may be counter-intuitive. We've been conditioned by brand managers to use copious amounts of shave foam or gel. (We see this in other products, too. In toothpaste ads, toothpaste is shown as a thick bead along the entire length of a toothbrush. My dentist tells me that an amount the size of a pea is plenty. Beer advertisements show consumers pouring beer into glasses and they do not show beer being drunk from a bottle or can. Pouring releases the bubbles and we drink more before getting full. So beer manufacturers promote pouring.) Cremo's directions to use an almond-sized amount worked great for me. It produces a thin film across my beard. But it is hard to get past the mental image of a thin film doing a better job than a face full of foam. It doesn't seem to be enough, but it is.

It is also terrific for travel. I bought a small, clear squeeze bottle at Walgreen's that conforms to TSA requirements and I filled the bottle with Cremo. It lasts MUCH longer than a can of foam. I can see how much is left and refill it when I need more. This is more convenient and less wastful.

I've used Gillette/Edge/ Barbasol Foam or Gel cans most of my life - and until I stumbled upon this stuff, my beard would grow into full-on grizzly-bear mode within a week. After I started using this stuff - I can go for about 10-12 days before I get to chewbacca mode - that's an average of 57% longer that I can go in between shaves now.

This stuff is awesome.

It takes a little getting used to in the sense that - if you are used to having a thick layer of foam or cream on your face when you shave - you're not going to get that with the Cremo Cream. What you will get, however, is truly the closest shave you've ever had.

You just need a tiny almond-sized amount of the cream and you need to really rub it into your beard to allow each and every hair to stand up. Once you do this, a thin, almost soap-like layer of lather is left on the skin, and no matter what kind of razor you're using, you're going to definitely get a closer shave with this cream than you would have if you'd used a traditional foam/gel shaving cream.

I've told my friends about this stuff, and gave 2 of the bottles from my three-pack away (in addition to what I had left of a sample size that I was lucky enough to get 5 months ago) and they've all come back to me saying they are hooked on this stuff for life, and they're never going to go back.

Buy this stuff - it lasts forever (since I got this stuff, I shave on average every 11 days now, and my 2 oz sample size lasted me about 5 months, so doing the same math, just 1-6 oz tube should last me about 15 months with one shave every 11 days or so) - and it keeps your face feeling smooth and less chewbacca-y for longer.
