Product Description

Tom McDermott is one of the finest and most versatile pianists working in New Orleans today.

Trumpeter Connie Jones is one of New Orleans' greatest and most under-appreciated treasures.

Together, these two perform fabulous duets packed with vitality and profound musicality that also showcase McDermott's composing talents.

Review

The two men on this disc are poets of sound, one a native New Orleanian and the other a transplant from upriver, both New Orleans musicians through and through. Tom McDermott, from St. Louis (always a great piano town), is not just one of the finest and most versatile pianists working currently in the Crescent City but one of the best composers working in American vernacular music today. His partner, here, trumpeter and cornetist Connie Jones, is one of New Orleans' greatest and most undersung musical treasures. -- Tom Piazza, author of eight books, including Why New Orleans Matters and the novel My Cold War.

Format: Audio CD
This is an absolutely wonderful disc that is captivating, charming, challenging, relaxing, and completely enjoyable. There are moments of unexpected fanciful piano jaunts into century old material that jumps to life through McDermott's agile touch. These are the moments that would always draw me away from the everyday mundane to the misty rememberances of long forgotten daydreams. McDermott is the standout on this disc. Very few, if any, pianists have such an all encompassing, broadly influenced, New Orleans approach to the keyboard.

Connie Jones has some fine moments as well. He plays the way he's always played, a direct, straight ahead, New Orleans style trumpet with a slight smear attached to note placement. He sings on a few numbers-Tishomingo Blues and I Don't Want Nuthin' for Christmas-and it pulls you right into the lush ambience.

There are 15 tunes on this delightful disc. All of them have an almost old-world charm that is fresh and inviting. Tom McDermott has scored big with this one and Connie Jones can take a bow as well. This may be one of this years greatest sleepers. Outstanding !

This is excellent music excellently played and (importantly) excellently recorded. Very well done! One of my favorite records. And I'll re-emphasize just how well recorded it is.

Easily recommended.
