Product Description

Creole Soul is an exploration of Charles musical roots featuring sounds from the French, Spanish
and English speaking Caribbean as well as North America, Creole Soul highlights myriad
inspirations from Haitian Creole chants and blues to bebop and R&B while drawing on an array of
rhythms including Rocksteady, Reggae, Bel Air, Kongo and Calypso.

Charles has been hailed as a daring improviser by Jazz Times while Ben Ratliff of The New York
Times called him one of the more ambitious soloists and composers. A musician and professor at Michigan State University, Charles studied under piano virtuoso Marcus Roberts at Florida State University and Mark Gould, former principal trumpeter of the Metropolitan Opera, at Juilliard. He was also mentored by Jamaican reggae and jazz luminary Monty Alexander and the late multiple Grammy Award-winning Trinidadian-American percussionist/songwriter Ralph MacDonald.

Review

Mr. Charles knows how to make an album more than just a calling card for a small band,
and how to sequence it too; he s an auteur. --The New York Times

[Charles] hones a velvet, supple tone that s as melodically captivating as it is rhythmically
agile...there s always a gracefulness to Charles playing that s immediately pleasing. --Downbeat

This album just popped up among my Amazon recommendations, so I basically took a chance on it. I'm from the old school as far as jazz is concerned, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Monk, but I'm a sucker for a darn good trumptet player and Etienne Charles is just that. He begins the album off with that ol' New Orleans, Congo Square, Creole chant...it was like being back home in Louisiana all over again. He continues with sultry, silky renditions of songs that will seduce even the most stubborn jazz enthusiast...a great buy, don't deny yourself the eargasms it will provide!!!

Love listening to the collection of songs on this album, especially my all time favorite "Turn Your Lights Down Low". I've seen Etienne perform Live a few times, and this is a true representation of his talent and passion for music. Lovers of jazz, or those who are interested in learning more about this genre of music, like myself, should definitely give this a listen.

Etienne Charles hails from Trinidad and Tobago and as a Trini I can say without hesitation and without fear of contradiction that the improvisational technique which he employs in his music has some genesis in his Caribbean roots and in the relaxed ex tempo technique which is so essential to the creation of calypso. That is not to deny the benefits of his impeccable musical pedigree. The two streams of influence find their way convincingly to their realisation in this, Ettiene's fourth offering on CD. His exploration of indigenous art form and its amalgamation into a truly creative sound makes this, I think, deserving of Grammy attention. I am so proud of this humble yet young and exciting maestro of the trumpet! This is definitely worth, not one, but several listens!

I got this CD from the library and the whole feel of the album is relaxed yet sophisticated and heart felt. Very Wyntonish with a Caribbean relaxed feel. Great supporting cast, Sax sounds like a whole horn section at times, in support, and out front. Conceptually nuanced, yet tightly conceived and delivered. I really enjoyed this recording.

Mr Charles is a fine trumpet player and group leader. His CD's all contain heavy elements of his Caribbean upbringing and his tunes are based upon his own personal experiences. He has a great sense of humor which comes out in his playing and composing. It is refreshing to listen to a group that is not heavily influenced by rock.
