Exploration in The Crew 2 is not as rewarding, especially since you can just fast travel to any part of the map at any time. Don’t get me wrong I’m sometimes a fan of fast travel, but it also takes away the reason to explore this enormous map they have created. I also would like to choke the guy that decided that the map should be pure white, such an eye strain, especially when playing late night. With exploration, missed is the ability to locate to locate satellite locations, or even abandoned car parts. If the car parts are in the game, I apologize I haven’t gotten that far as I have decided to shelve the game until Ubisoft runs their countless patches to fix a somewhat unfinished game.
Car handling is a completely different story – Compared to the first game where cars felt like they were floating, they made a giant leap with handling mechanics. I don’t feel like I also have to oversteer, or have to always make adjustments. However, they seriously need to patch cars hit detection. There is ZERO effect on a car speed when hitting walls, barriers or obstacles. This means there is ZERO skill required. Why bother tapping your brake, and reapply the gas at the right time to slide through a turn, when someone else can just wall grind right passed you. Again, hoping a patch can fix that, and that’s why I’m waiting to continue playing.
Graphics, aghh the stupid cartoonish graphics. They had so much potential to follow up on the Crew, and instead they go this silly route, which kind of reminds me of their switch from Watch Dogs dark and grimy vibe, to Watch Dogs 2 chipper, happy, and sunshine vibe. Even on my Xbox One X, not really too impressed. It’s decent, but I was expecting more after experiencing the likes of FC5.
Car Upgrades and customization - While I enjoy walking around your house and such, again they could have really built off the first game. I enjoyed driving to garages, seeing my ride drive in the cutscene and making the changes. Or when you would do a major upgrade, get to see the body stripped and the chassis and engine parts. Now you drive over your loot boxes, and simple upgrade numbers, so disappointing.
Story and voice acting – Or lack thereof with both. I enjoyed the solid performance from Troy baker in the first game, and I even enjoyed the cliché revenge aspect. It drives me crazy when people say the first game is cringe worthy, yet they praise The Crew 2 with it’s cheesy “earn fans and be cool” aspect, or the fact that they obviously didn’t pay anyone to do voice acting. I don’t know, maybe it’s preference, but the whole festival vibe is Forza’s thing, should have just stayed original and just made it better.
I really wanted to enjoy this game, and maybe one day I will. Ubisoft has obviously done what it has done best for years, release an unfinished game, and let the consumers be the game testers, and we’ll have the complete game in about 6 months to a year. I’m really worn down by this trend, and the always online thing really needs to be removed. I also would like to point out there have been countless requests for a new game option, but yet again we don’t get it. You can’t even delete your saved date, because the game is stored on a cloud server. Shame shame shame.
I wish I could have said more good things about the game, because the polish just isn’t there, it’s a watered down version of the last game. If anyone else is enjoying it, I’m happy for you, but if someone is curious if this worth the price tag, I’d just wait for sale, and for Ubisoft to fix all the bugs and game play issues.
One last thing to touch base on, the planes and boats are a decent add on, but the whole change from car to boat to plane thing was a missed opportunity, as there isn't many races that utilize the feature.
The racing action itself is fairly well done, the cars handle about as you would expect from an arcade-leaning title. Drifting feels particularly well done here, if I'm honest. However, the boats and plane are just a cool novelty..nothing more. I could have done without them.
As far as the sound goes, music is the typical "Who the heck is that?" stations and nothing more. Engine sounds are actually pretty decent, but nothing on par with Forza or even GRID. This does leave me with one..glaring...point left to make. The horrendous voice acting. Not only are they saddled with some of the most cliched, hackneyed dialog this side of a MST3K feature...the delivery is quite possibly the worst I've ever heard. They make "The Room" sound like Morgan Freeman and Orson Welles discussing quantum physics. It's THAT bad. Jarringly so.
All in all, a vastly disappointing effort..which is a shame because TC1 became a pretty solid title after a lot of patches and updates. Why the sequel was released in what honestly feels like an unfinished state is a mystery only the publisher can solve...
