I was asked if I would like to review this charming little story while it was on a free give-away, and I'm not sorry that I read it.

Classic fantasy, the story follows a boy as he is growing into maturity. While it employs various cliches of the orphan with a mysterious past, and the elderly bard-teacher, I still found it a fresh take on the old story of coming of age. It reminded me a bit (only no dragons!) of McCaffrey's dragonsinger tales.

When his teacher fails to come one winter, Cricket finds himself in the big city, at music school (of sorts) and learning to play his flute and harp. He finds a friend, buys another, and has adventures. I can't give away much more… this isn't a novel, it's a short story (Amazon says 82 pages).

The story carried me right along smoothly, and while some of the peripheral characters were only thumbnail sketches, for such a short work that was quite sufficient.

Which was a disappointment, as the story ended before I was ready for it to be over. I will keep an eye out for more when I want a sweet, calm story to enjoy.

Author Michael A. Hooten has created an interesting world filled with compelling characters.

I bought book one of the Cricket series on a tip from a friend. The story starts well, and engaged me from the first page. Cricket is a orphan brought up in an small, out-of-the-way village. A traveling harper befriends him, and kindles his interest in becoming a bard. In Celtic lore, a bard is a musician, storyteller, historian and judge. A bard is so respected that they have no honor price, meaning that to kill one is unforgivable to all of the culture.

The author weaves in Celtic myths and legends, bringing the story to life. The story held me to the end, and I eagerly bought the next book in the series, A Cricket at Court.

Was a little hesitant to read this book referred to me by a friend. Many self published books, and even those by major publishes these days, have a lot of spelling and grammatical errors that they disturb your concentration on the story. Happy to say that is not the case here. The characters are well formed and likable and you want to know what will happen to them. The story pulls you in right away and can't wait to read the rest of the series. Books need to be longer..
