Designed for a lifetime
Every detail of the Cricut Explore experience has been thoughtfully designed the to make being creative easy and intuitive. The designers of the Cricut Explore machine wanted to make a functional, beautiful, and enjoyable experience for a creative person. When designing the Cricut Explore machine, the team focused on perfecting the details.
Kevlar reinforced belts
The Cricut Explore belt mechanism is reinforced with a Kevlar polymer material best known for its use in bulletproof vests and helmets. This gives it superior lightweight strength and flexibility, as well as a very high degree of positioning accuracy and durability.
Premium German carbide blade
A totally redesigned blade was also necessary to ensure the most precise cuts. Working closely with metallurgy experts, we cast the blade tip in a tungsten-carbide alloy—one of the hardest grade alloys available. This finely grained metal resists wear and breakage, greatly extending the expected lifespan of the blade.
Rigorous testing
We performed extensive testing to ensure precise cutting of different shapes, sizes, and materials using the Cut Smart system and new blade design. Over 5,000 hours of standardized testing across hundreds of machines helped to ensure the Cricut Explore machine's cut accuracy.

Another thing I need to note: I use my Cricut Expression (the first model), my Gypsy, AND my Silhouette machine for my business, so I use all 3 machines every single day for the last few years. I have been through probably 5 Expressions in my business over the last few years (I use them all the time, so they wear out faster!). I have had machines that cut wobbly scallops and circles, but I've always returned those machines and gotten new ones because, honestly, when you pay so much for a machine, it needs to work properly. SO, while that is a "selling point" of this machine, it was not the piece that applied to me.
I purchased this machine with trepidation since I have been let down by the last 2 machines, but again, it's as easy as returning it if you're not happy, so I did it.
I'm REALLY glad I did! From the moment you open the box, this is a different feel from any of the other machines. Simple packaging, step by step instructions, clean, lovely, heavily protected. I was cautiously excited at this point. The machine is very simple to set up, and right away you can cut any of the 50 projects that Cricut has already put together for you. The projects are ADORABLE, at some point I'll get to them ;) As far as using the interface of the Design Space, it is a little more complicated than it seems at first (I'm used to Silhouette Design Studio, and while this is similar, not all of the key stroke/demands are the same, giving it a learning curve for sure); however, there are VERY awesome- easy to understand- step by step videos that Cricut has put on Youtube... so it took me about 1 day to master the Design Space. I LOVE IT. So much easier to weld, hide unwanted lines in an image, etc. than the Gypsy.
The machine IS quieter, and I can definitely tell that they have upped their game on QUALITY. The machine is very sturdy, the parts are higher quality than I've seen in Cricut machines.
I am SO HAPPY with this machine, and I would definitely encourage anyone who is thinking about getting it to do so. You can always return it if you're not happy!
Another HUGE selling point, is that you can buy a monthly subscription from Cricut that gives you access to TONS, I mean TONS of images from Cricut cartridges. The subscription is $10 a month, and you get a 2 week trial period when you purchase and register your machine. I own LOTS of cartridges, 2 bookshelves full, and I WILL be subscribing anyway because there's so much MORE available through the subscription! You can also cut any font from your computer as well as your Cricut fonts.
Now, to compare it to my beloved Silhouette Cameo (and trust me, it IS beloved!!), to be 100% honest, for me, there is no comparison. It's apples to oranges. The Silhouette is another beautiful machine that, until my Explore, was the highest quality machine I own (heavy duty, high quality parts, doesn't break down, good customer service, etc). The Expression and the Silhouette are both highly functional tools in my office, I use them for similar things sometimes, but I also use them for completely different purposes often. I love them both, so I'm neither Team Cricut nor Team Cameo, I'm both ;) I'll never get rid of my Expressions... my Gypsy will die soon (the end is near), but with the Explore Design Space, that will matter far less.
I am 100% satisfied with this purchase, and it has been a long time since I've said that about a Cricut product. I can see how the company is taking a new, fresh movement forward and I'm very pleased. Good job, Cricut!
Cons:
Confusing package descriptions
Packages bundles don't have everything you need
Packages/tools/cutting materials made to make you spend more
No real designing software (have to use alternative vector program)
Mats are too sticky & difficult to work with
Thin paper curls when removed from mats
You need a internet connection to use
Software is so slow and can crash
Pros:
Nicely packaged
Easy to open
Easy set up
Very simple to figure out how to use
very easy if you arent design savy
make projects in very little time with very little effort
Cuts a variety of materials
Possibilities are endless
The Buying Experience:
I must say picking out a package was hard, almost a headache. When you are trying to sell someone a machine especially a first time buyer who is unfamiliar with it I really do believe all of the parts and tools that are "necessary" for you to use it should automatically be included. Its hard to decide what to purchase when there are so many pieces and even the items description here are not clear exactly as to what comes with your package. I got the "starter package" and was unclear if it would come with a mat because one isn't pictured or mentioned. So I bought the 12x24inch mat separately. Turns out when I got my Cricut the 12x12inch mat was included, it was also bent from the way it was packaged. The way the other packages are labeled are confusing as to what you do/don't get for example my package came with a "Deep Cut Housing & Blade" the other packages don't have a blade listed so it looks as if it doesn't come with one at all which is confusing it makes you think you still need to buy a blade separately so you can use the machine when it arrives. When I got my Cricut I got the blade in the package but there also was a blade put on the machine. I also noticed they have a bluetooth adapter in some packages, to be honest this is something the machine should have built in. They have the machine packages setup basically so you are forced to spend more money. Ideally it would be nice if you bought the Cricut will ALL the tools (spatulas, scoring tool, pens, blades & 1 of each size mat) and were offered a package "add on" with the different types of cutting materials vinyl, paper, fabric etc. The way its set up to purchase now is just annoying.
Setting Up & Using:
First thing I will say I am very experienced with both pc and mac and adobe illustrator/photoshop etc as I have been a designer about 12 years. I'm currently using a iMac running OSX 10.9.3 I didn't have a terrible time setting up the machine but it didn't go perfectly smooth either. The machine was packaged nicely in its carrying bag. very easy to take out and plug up.
Once I got to the setup process that was a breeze I wasn't asked to do a firmware updated and everything installed correctly. I went to calibrate the machine and the only problem I had was printing the sheet. You guys should include a few calibration sheets with the machine and have it so people can print them out separately from the calibration test area with the correct printer settings you need to use. The first 3 sheets I printed weren't printed correctly because of my settings and I had to basically figure it out on my own. Its also kind of annoying that there is no mention of needing a printer to calibrate your machine what if you don't even have one? That's why I say you guys should include the sheets to begin with. The calibration process itself was very easy aside from the printing part and THE MAT the sticky mats are kind of annoying the standard sticky mats which are what I have were really sticky at first and when I went to remove the calibration sheet a lot of it stuck to the mat and had to be scraped off. Not a big deal but this can get time consuming and I can see a few projects even being ruined a lot of the paper removed from the mats ends up curling up after its removed. Overall setup was easy I didn't need to read a manual to figure out how to use it or get it working
Designing & Cutting:
I have a ton of experience with illustrator so I designed some test shapes just to see how it works. I didn't have a problem importing my simple first file. I noticed though if you are buying shapes, projects etc it can start getting very pricey. If you have no design experience in another vector program that you can upload your own file from you're limited and forced to spend a lot of money. Its still easy to create things and nice if you don't care to design your own shapes anyways a lot of people like the simplicity I'm sure but for me as a designer I love to make my own things. I cut on fabric first and noticed right away the machine messed up. The fabric didn't adhere to the mat all the way so some parts of the fabric lifted when the mat shifted and folded over when the machine moved back and forth blocking the blade from cutting through some areas. I also noticed the blade cut lines into the mat even during the calibration process. It didn't cut through it but now I'm wondering how long these mats will hold up. I also tested on paper and had a good outcome with that. 1 of the 6 shapes I cut did get ruined though.
I'm going to update this when I really get to use it overall I like it but the pricing of the materials, slow software & need for a internet connection really are a draw back that I think should be addressed and fixed.

The machine cuts fast and smooth and is impressively quiet. You get much of what you need to start, including a first project to help get you familiar with both the machine and Design Space. I highly recommend buying the tool set that is sold separately - it makes the work much easier and neater.

We have had the Cricut for over a year now, and it's been used for almost every occasion that we've hosted. Both 2D and 3D items have been made on various media. It is the default go-to for arts and crafts in our house.
The only complaint we have thus-far has been that our trips to Michael's craft store has multiplied.
