Prolific author Kathy Clark continues the suspense of Denver After Dark in her latest offering, Cries In The Night. The main character, Julie, has a secret past and a heroic present. The story begins in the heat of the moment, not with Julie but with a woman who is beaten and with her son who witnesses the attack. Julie is called to the crime scene as head of the Victim's Advocate Department. She calms and supports victims of brutal domestic violence, traumatic car accidents, fiery devastation, and overwhelming natural disasters. But she is haunted by a shadow from her past. The shadow waits nearby, breaks into her home, and kills her beloved cat. The shadow also places a snake in her car, causing her to crash into a telephone pole. Eventually the shadow's identity is revealed. But for most of the story, the man in Julie's life is a flirty, well-muscled firefighter named Rusty. Julie and Rusty slowly form a psychological and romantic bond by their work and by their mutual attraction and need.

The character of Julie is well-developed and complex as she begins to face her past. She confronts her fear and slowly learns to trust again for a hopeful future. The descriptions of emergencies and human behavior are realistic and thoughtful. Anxious moments of suspense and swift actions are balanced by tender and erotic moments. Cries In The Night by Kathy Clark shows a snowy, Christmastime in Denver with more than a few brave souls. Many of the cries in the night are heard by people who care.

(Please note: This story deals with domestic abuse and the opening scene is graphic. Please take this into consideration before reading further and/or purchasing this book.)

This was a surprisingly heavy story. After reading the first story in this series, I was (admittedly) expecting this one to carry a similar vibe. But that got tossed out the window after reading Chapter 1.

Rusty and Julie's relationship was overshadowed by an unseen threat to Julie, a stalker who made it known they were out for their pound of flesh. Her fear and Rusty's urgency to protect her are damn near tangible. I won't lie, I felt chills at times reading this story.

But I also felt incredible warmth and joy. Unlike his brother Sam who admitted he was a one woman man, Rusty was more like a love-'em-and-leave-'em man but Julie made him want to be more than that if just for her. That's not to say he didn't influence change in Julie though. He did, just not in a way I thought he would.

It took me a bit to realize that Julie was only existing, keeping herself from others because of her past. But existing, even if you do so with a purpose, isn't living. With Rusty, she found the courage to live again, to grow, to be stronger than before, to move forward. The woman she was at the end was a stunning contrast to the woman she was at the beginning.

Ms. Clark is an author who knows what she's writing about. The details she puts into this story about what it means to be a Victims' Advocate are so well written that I had no problem understanding what these men and women do and how much abuse survivors can benefit from them. This was a fantastic story to read because the light and life at the end made all of the darkness throughout it worth reading.

I read about 87% of this book. The main characters were interesting and I liked them. I stop reading once I found out who the madman was because I couldn't believe we were expected to be surprised to learn who it was while the main characters remained clueless.

For those who want to know: the sex is moderately explicit but handled well. I like the way Julie and Rusty gradually became a couple as opposed to salivating at their first sight of each other.

A mixture of suspense, romance and thriller made this book a fun and entertaining read for me. I do not normally read romance novels, but the romance in this story really added to the plot while the thoughtful character development really made me care about each of the characters. It did keep me guessing and I enjoyed the suspense so much that I read the book in a little over a day! I was given a complementary copy for review, and I would recommend this book for those who enjoy suspense novels as well as romance. You will have both along with a wonderfully written story and satisfying ending.

I sat and read this book in one day, which is amazing considering my hectic schedule. Ms. Clark provides an inside view into the lives of first responders. We see them at the scene of the crimes, or in the midst of emergencies, and they are the people's heroes. But do we really know them beyond that? She provides a candid in-depth look into the chaos and confusion that is their lives, the raw emotions they deal with behind the scenes as a result of their career choices, and show us the human side of these special people, walking in a unique calling.

I fell in love with the characters, Julie and Rusty, while becoming endeared to his brothers, Chris and Sam as well. Other characters in the story that were central to the storyline are so authentic, that you actually become connected to them in a real way.

I loved the story because while it does have elements of romance, the story was not romance based. It is a contemporary fiction story, with elements of suspense to keep your adrenaline pumping, and elements of romance to keep the heat flowing from the pages. This was a professionally, well-written story, which takes a look at real life adversities of abuse victims, emergency personnel, and true life challenges from a first responders perspective.

Ms. Clark did a wonderful job of weaving a tale of intrigue, and compassion with depth, and reality. The characters are relatable, and a hidden secret from one of the characters past can derail even the best laid protection plans. Ms. Clark did not miss a beat in this romantic suspense novel.

Julie works for the Denver police department as a Victims Advocate so she gets called whenever there is a fire, abuse or any kind of crises where she is needed to help people through their difficult time. She always goes to them immediately and continues to keep in touch with them to make sure they are alright. Due to events in her past, she knows how important that is.

Rusty is a firefighter who Julie met several times when they were on the same scene. As a handsome fireman, Rusty has always had women coming on to him but Julie is different and he is not sure what to think of her. They are in each other's thoughts a lot and slowly build a relationship.

This book is well researched making the details on victims' advocates easy to follow. While it has many heart-breaking events, this story is a mystery with romance and a fantastic ending. Julie and Rusty's relationship progressed slowly which I really liked. So many authors have the couple fall in love or having sex instantly so that it makes the story unbelievable. That didn't happen in this book.

I had a hard time rating this book so I am giving it 3.5 stars.
