Julie Berry grew up in western New York. She holds a BS from Rensselaer in communication and an MFA from Vermont College in writing for children and young adults. She now lives in southern California with her husband and four sons.

"The Emperor's Ostrich," Julie's newest middle grade from Roaring Brook, earned a Booklist star. Amazing Book!

I loved this book! Books like these I want to treasure, which is why it took me so long to read and write a review. I only allowed myself to read a chapter or two here and there to preserve the newness of this great novel. It's an excellent story and has such fun wordplay and language. A must read!

Adventure, magic, and mystery for middle grade readers

I liked this second book in the Wishes and Wellingtons series even better than the first. Now we know and care about the characters; there is less time spent on set-up and more on adventure and mystery. Berry seems to have found a perfect blend of magic within a realistic historical setting (England in 1897) for middle grade readers. While the book ends with most details nicely wrapped up, there is space for Maeve and her friends to have more adventures with Mermeros the djinni (and all those trying to get their hands on his wishes.) I do hope we get to spend more time with them.

This is a Middle Grade with a lot of Magic and fun, and this is the second book in the Wishes and Wellingtons series. I loved the characters in this book, and the magic in this book was cute and fun. The mystery was fun, and that was a lot of action in this book. I did feel that it took a little bit for this book to get going. I did feel there was also some funny parts in this book. This is a great fun middle grade book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
