Review

"I like the author's writing style and voice. I'd love to see what else she has in store for us!" ~ Nikki from Storm Goddess Book Reviews

From the Author

I really had a fun time writing this book. While I love Madeline and Donovan's romance story, the murder mystery was exciting and kept me glued to my laptop each evening. I don't pre-plot so creating suspects, learning the motives of each one of them, and ultimately figuring out "who done it" was a thrill. I've been asked in interviews if any of the suspects were just red herrings, put in the book to trick the reader. My honest answer is definitely not. Since I wasn't sure who it actually was until more than halfway through the book, any one of the suspects could have been responsible for the murders.

While I don't intend to preach my personal thoughts and beliefs in my work, the things I really believe in do find their way in, it seems. Donovan's story line touches on the issue of child abuse. Having people working toward prevention of abuse (of any kind) is important to me. I've had readers tell me they cried during parts of Donovan's story, and it is not my aim to upset anyone. However, as a society, I think we need to be vigilant against abuse and protect children.

Other than that heavier theme, however, there is a lot of humor, happiness, romance, and suspense (as well as lots of drama for the struggling lovers). I aimed to create a tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat, guessing until the very end. Thanks for your support and happy reading!

This book is aptly titled, because it serves up plenty of crime and passion!

The love story between Madeline and Donovan was well-paced and believable. I enjoyed seeing a woman who has been burned by love learn to trust again, and a former womanizer finally discover true love and give his heart to someone. There were some misunderstandings along the way (what's a good romance novel without them?), and rooting for them to overcome them was part of the fun.

What really kept me turning pages was the mystery element. So many murder mysteries aren't really a mystery at all, with the culprit easy to guess in the early chapters. There were plenty of possible suspects here, and while the true perpetrator was someone I identified as a possible suspect, it was never obvious and the twists and turns of the plot kept me guessing the whole way.

From the dramatic first page until the last, Chantel Rhondeau had me hooked. A walk at the beach changed Madeline Scott's life forever. Finding a dead body by the shore turned her peaceful life upside down. Luckily, she meets Officer Donovan Andrews and a quick attraction forms between the two. When Donovan becomes the prime suspect, Madeline doesn't know what to do, but with Donovan's persistence, she joins him in trying to find the true suspect.

Donovan is an attractive Alpha-male, known as a ladies' man, who turns his ways when he finds a connection with Madeline. Madeline is a feisty, independent woman. With persuasion, she soon learns that she can give her heart to someone, without regrets. In the midst of all the chaos, Madeline and Donovan find solace in each other, learning to love and trust again.

The story is full of mystery. A whole list of secondary characters has you looking over your shoulder and playing detective as you try to figure out who is the killer. And of course, the romantic and dramatic twists and turns throughout the story keep the reader on their toes.

If you like a "Who Done It" tale with a splash of sexy romance, this is the novel for you. It won't disappoint.

I really enjoyed this novel even more than her first one, Always & Forever, and I thought that was bloody good.

One thing I liked about Crimes and Passion was that some of it took place and focused on a dog grooming business, Woofy Cuts. It offered a unique setting I thought, and helped change up from the run of the mill office buildings and police stations. A minor point, I know, but something a bit different.

The cop was the man about town. As a male reader, I enjoyed Donovan. He took some getting used to, but I liked the obstacles and reputation he had to overcome. He had character flaws which I love in a character. Much more interesting to follow than a never sinning alpha male.

Madeline is a woman torn between her head and her heart. It's not an easy battle, and I'm not going to reveal which one she chooses. Suffice to say, choices like that are never easy.

One thing I really like about Chantel's writing is it's two fold storylines. The writing is very clever. It is romance of the finest quality, but leaves you guessing from one chapter to the next. Will they get together? There's plenty of reasons for them NOT to. I like that. The other element is the mystery side of it. Lots of twists and unknowing that keeps the pages flicking into the night to find out 'who dunnit?' You can't ask for more than that.

This is another outstanding read and one that I highly recommend.

I was very excited to read the second book by this author. The thrilling plot-turns in this book kept me anxious to reach the end of the story. I enjoyed the developing relationship between the main characters and how it naturally flowed through the mystery. I greatly enjoyed this book from the first page all the way to the very last sentence. I look forward to reading her future novels.

Talk about bad luck and Madeline Scott has had her fair share of it, maybe more. Reeling from a canceled wedding where her groom and maid of honor were found together, Madeline Scott moves to a small coastal town only to find a body on the beach, as in dead body.

The responding officer is Donovan Andrews, the local playboy who's cycled through all of the women in town, some several times, from the police chief's daughter to Madeline's boss, Lindsay.

Sparks fly as suspicions revolve around the town that Donovan was the killer. Madeline believes Donovan is innocent, and reluctantly join forces with him to find the real killer--all the while fending off his romantic overtures.

The plot thickens with a second murder, but when Madeline is injured by a maniac, Donovan stays at her side and wins over her parents. After several twists, both romantic and suspenseful, Madeline has to trust Donovan or lose her life.

This story was exciting and dramatic. I could understand how distrustful Madeline was of Donovan, but I loved the way Donovan persisted on winning her over. He was sweet and thoughtful, and always made sure to consider her feelings about her self image and her past. Even though he had a reputation, once he fell in love with Madeline, he did everything he could to reassure her and put up with her snarky remarks and putdowns.

I was really happy that Madeline finally understood why Donovan was the way he was and accepted his past, and I loved the ending and the plans they have for their future together.
