For me at least, "Dr. Boli's Celebrated Magazine" is one of the internet's great pleasures. What should I expect, I wondered, from a novel by Dr. Boli? The result, not really surprisingly, is... a very odd reading experience. Amusing, enigmatic, possibly profound, and even - sometimes - moving, "The Crimes of Galahad" is a book like no other you will read this year. I'm pretty sure I can say that without fear of contradiction.

"The Crimes of Galahad" purports to be the memoirs of Galahad Newman Bousted, "the wickedest man in the world." This is his own account of the misdeeds which brought him to conspicuous wealth and social prominence without anyone, even his wife or his most intimate friends, suspecting his evil machinations.

Galahad Bousted starts out as the son of a humble stationer in 19th Century Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Frustrated in his desire to motivate his father to agree to his plans for expanding the business, he falls under the influence of a French book (not actually the book itself, but a magazine review of it) which convinces him that the only way to achieve success is to devote himself to ruthless evil. In pursuit of this goal, he works long hours, finds ways to please his customers, and makes himself agreeable, even to people he doesn't like much.

I'm tempted to describe "The Crimes of Galahad" as a parody, but it's a parody of a very subtle kind. Or perhaps a meta-parody. If I were to try to explain the joke to you, I'd not only spoil it, I'm not sure I'd truly convey the point (I'm not even sure I really figured it out). In a way, the best comment on this book might be to simply read Luke 16:1-9.

This is a book that will be appreciated by extremely intelligent readers (it will help if they're smarter than me). That recommendation might be bad for sales, I fear, but nevertheless I recommend "The Crimes of Galahad."

As a chronicle of the vicious career of the eponymous varlet, this is an excellently written account of the life and crimes of a man lost to all human decency. As a warning against crime and moral corruption, it is less successful.

Therefore, I can only recommend it to persons who feel assured of their moral probity, strength of will, and possession of virtue. Such readers will benefit from the perusal of this work. I feel confident that you all know who you are and therefore do not need me to tell you if you are at risk from reading this book.

I should start by saying that I have known the author for a very long time, so it was not always entirely clear to me whether I was enjoying the book or the author.

How do I describe this novel? Um...well...probably the best way to describe it is that it's as if Artemis Fowl went into the stationary business. In Pittsburgh. In the 19th century.

Our protagonist, one Galahad Newman Bousted, decides to break out of his rather dreary existence as the son of a lowly and unambitious stationary-store owner by pursuing evil with the goal of establishing a worldwide stationary empire (an unusual ambition, but there you have it.) He proceeds to implement nefarious plan after nefarious plan, only to have circumstances fall in such a way that he somehow does the good and right thing and comes up smelling like roses. Therein lies the one real flaw of this book--it becomes predictable. Halfway in, you pretty much know how it's going to turn out.

Otherwise, a very smooth and entertaining read. I predict Dr. Boli will turn out some great novels just as soon as he learns not to be quite so nice to his protagonist.

It should be noted that is a book firmly planted in the 19th century. It makes no concessions to modern times in style, language, or even typography, which gives it a certain charm not often found in modern books.

After reading Mike Aquilina's blog about THE CRIMES OF GALAHAD, I ran over to see the book on Amazon and checked out the other 3 reviews. Who would not want to curl up with this novel? Read the review about it being the book of the decade! That is amazing and it is H. Albertus Boli's first novel!

I quickly bought my copy of THE CRIMES OF GALAHAD, by H. Albertus Boli, and will report back this week. I bought the Kindle for my iPad so I could pull it up and can tell now by Chapter 4, I am hooked! I have been reading it aloud to Ralston, a close friend. He is delighted with Galahad.

I will be back with more review but I know this is going to be a great read. The cover and the humor reminded me of the early New Yorker.

I read this novel two years ago and reviewed it on my blog, Gypsy Scholar. I meant to post the review here, but unaccountably neglected this resolution, so here it is now - but beware, for this review contains PLOT SPOILERS.

. . .

Anyway, I began reading this book at the encouragement of an old Baylor friend, Ken Askew, albeit with no little trepidation, for the back cover warns:

"Galahad Newman Bousted is the wickedest man on earth Cringe as he hatches an outrageous scheme to defraud his own father! Gasp as he plots to ravish an innocent maiden! Shudder as he plans a murder so foul, he sickens even himself!"

Not the sort of book that I ordinarily would read, but it came well recommended, and turned out to be quite amusing. Galahad does undergo a sort of degradation, as one might expect from the title and back cover, but not quite as one might expect. He in fact never entirely succeeds in following through on his wicked schemes -- though not for want of intention or effort.

He had been raised as a good boy, but upon graduating from high school faced a life of penury as a clerk in his father's stationery shop. The horror of such a future -- for he felt that he deserved far better -- drove him to adopt a wicked life of selfishness, inspired by a review of some obscure Frenchman's book advocating a life of evil based on seeking one's self-interest.

But each time Galahad sets out to follow his own self-interest in ways that would result in genuine wickedness, unforeseen events intervene that transform his selfish plans into results beneficial for all concerned.
