Got this at launch via amazon prime’s 20% off. Maybe should have waited for a sale.
The S&M mini games, which account for about 5 hours of the total gameplay, are definitely the highlight of the Criminal Girls experience. The slimeshot game, in particular, is masterclass game design, the japanese at their finest. The touch controls were a little loosey-goosey, but I had the wife help out and we got it done. Turns out she’s an excellent spanker and slime flinger. Much amusement was had all around. I never played the first game, because of the pink smoke. But the Live 2D is kind of genius.
The battle system was very much like a card game, but without the depth of Monster Monpiece or gwent in The Witcher III. It was very casual, like a mobile game. Every boss is like a wall. You just have to grind to the level that surpasses it, then it’s a piece of prison girl cake. I mostly watched Kinda Funny videos, while grinding it out. It’s a nice lifestyle game for Vita Island.
The story is kind of nonexistent. It’s more like a theme. I mean, it’s a fantastic theme. Girls in prison need to be spanked for my amusement, so that I can be all powerful. Again, the japanese are making western devs like bioware look like tepid nitwits. But this is not Person 3. The character side stories in Criminal Girls aren’t even one-tenth as interesting as the lesser social links. It’s about as deep as the story in Advance Wars.
Dungeon and enemy design are absolutely unremarkable. Had they gone the route of Dungeon Travelers 2 for enemy art, I’d be giving out all the stars. Instead all the bosses and enemies are like generic rocks and bugs. At least the little prison girls were cute.
Re: naughty prison girls... I liked two and a half of them. The white hair girl is the best, maybe the best art design of any jrpg girl outside of Persona and Senran Kagura. Very flirty. Spanking her was the emotional center of gravity of the entire Criminal experience. The green hair girl is number two, but her outfit just didn’t reveal enough personality. The red hair girl was about half of want I wanted. The purple girl, fantastic outfit, just on the wrong bodytype. The blonde princess, had some fine poses, but that haircut/outfit, such an unforced error. It helped that the rest of tropes were at least sometimes paired up with the girls I liked. But if Criminal Girls went full on Senran Kagura, I’d give 10x the stars. Such are my enthusiasms.
The censorship, and I’m about as anti-censorship as we all are, I have to say, honestly, aesthetically, I prefer the localized art. The whips and chains and lollipops, if there was a setting to choose between original art and alternative art, I’d go localized all the way. But as they don’t give us such a choice, I consider myself a bit of a lucky duck here.
In the end, I will always think back fondly of my time spanking the white hair girl.
She, alone, is the reason I’m giving this 3-star game a bonus star.
