Product Description
Cris Tales is a gorgeous, indie love letter to classic JRPGs with a new perspective. Peer into the past, act in the present, and watch as your choices dynamically change the future -- all on one screen as you play! Join the newly awakened Time Mage Crisbell and her fantastical companions in a fantasy world facing a grim future. The powerful Time Empress and her forces threaten to bring about a cataclysm tearing apart Crystallis and the other four Kingdoms of the region. To stop the Time Empress and rewrite the future of the land, you will embark on a harrowing journey across the kingdoms, meeting and recruiting powerful allies to aid in the fight. Master their abilities and Crisbell's unique Time Magic to overcome mighty foes - send them into the past to face their weaker, younger selves, send a foe to a future where they've succumbed to all the damage of a poison applied in the present, or create your own strategies in this one-of-a-kind combat system. As Crisbell's powers grow, you will make choices with far-reaching consequences for the people you meet - consequences that will impact the world you'll experience in real-time throughout your journey. Every character, NPC, enemy, and even Kingdom has a past, a present and one or more futures, depending on your actions! Beautifully hand-drawn 2D art is animated frame by frame to bring the branching possibilities to life across more than 20 hours of gameplay. Experience a unique combination of branching stories, innovative combat, and classic RPG excitement in Cris Tales' exciting and unforgettable exploration of how our actions echo through time.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2021I've just started but I've at least played the demo and I love this game. It's creative and the art is SO BEAUTIFUL TO LOOK AT. The gameplay is captivating, I love whenever I get to time skip!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2022The story is charming and there's an interesting play of cause and effect, although I don't think the battle mechanics really use that to its potential aside from a handful of key battl3s. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous if a little static. It is refreshing to have a nice 25 hour JRPG and be done with it.
That said, it has its issues. The loading times are atrocious and happen for EVERY RANDOM BATTLE and kind of kill the flow of story events. There is a somewhat small world that you double back over. Battles and enemies get repetitive and there are points where you have to grind to stand a chance to move the story along. So sometimes it feels "old school" in the wrong ways.
I still found it worthwhile, but your tolerance of the flaws may vary.

A CCCReviewed in Canada on October 7, 20215.0 out of 5 stars I was expecting something mediocre
The art style, the music, the story and the gameplay works properly, my only complain would be that time crystals become obsolete after certain point and the developers should add harder late game bosses.
DMCReviewed in Australia on February 10, 20242.0 out of 5 stars The whole is not greater than the sum of its parts
The developers of Cris Tales describe it as a love letter to classic JRPGs but from my playtime there’s some interesting time-related game mechanics however the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts in this instance. This is due to the unfortunate combination of environmental puzzles, random battles and significant loading times. I would be getting familiarised with a dungeon to find the way through but I would be interrupted by a random battle with the local fauna (surprise!) that would be bookended with a five-second loading screen. Upon returning to the dungeon, it would take a moment to get my bearings before the next random battle was triggered. Rinse and repeat. After 31 hours my patience had worn thin, despite all be wrapped up in a lovely art direction that reminded me of Eyvind Earle (Disney’s 1959 Sleeping Beauty). I’m also quite annoyed for investing 35,000 marbles (in-game currency) in upgrading a playable character’s weapon only for them to be killed off mid-campaign, along with their equipped items. Defeating the Empress of Time is only half the game, with the second half filled with meaningless back and forth between the four locations which doesn’t respect the players time. Consolidating this padding would have resulted in a more cohesive gameplay experience. Other annoyances includes the slippery controls especially when pushing blocks, and EXP that is not applied to benched characters so I generally kept the same three throughout - Cristopher was my MVP. To finish on a positive, I found the ending’s narrative satisfying and the quality of the voice acting excellent. Passable: 5/10
