Beautiful view of a world in flux

As a child, my father would take the entire family to Mexico during the summer of the 1970s. We would visit two cities (Leon and Mexico City). In Mexico City, we would stay with my uncle's in-laws who owned a block-long building. Their lifestyle, replete with 'criadas' (stay-in caretakers) was mirrored by what Alfonso Cuaron showed in his B & W film, "Roma." Cuarón perfectly recreates Mexico City and society of the early-1970s. My father was present at the 1968 student marches we were in Mexico City during the 1971 clashes. This movie's focus on the family of a doctor during the tumultuous period was like a time machine for me. The main character, Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), except for her pregnancy was similar to one of my aunt's 'criada'. The world of a beloved family servant is a throwback to earlier times but so much a part of the Mexican society in the 1970s. Cleo and the others who were indigenous domestic workers were part of the family unit and were often cared for by the family. I related so well to them caring for and being loved by the abandoned mother and her four small children. Cuaron has created a masterpiece of Mexican society and cinema with this opus and homage to a criada who raised him. Thank you.

A Touching & Sensitive Tribute

I've been waiting over a year to see this movie. I never go to the movies because audiences today talk, get up and down, eat meals, and play with their electronic toys during the film. The director, Mr. Cuaron should NEVER have given Netflix the exclusive rights to show this film for a year. Netflix is known for television and mass market television and movies watched on various machines. How many Netflix customers watch foreign films - 1%? People who watch art, foreign films and opera typically don't "stream" - they buy Blu-ray discs.

Thankfully, Criterion has released an excellently packaged Blu-ray disc with an informative book. Cuaron is a talented director. "Gravity" was an epic (in the true sense of the word) film. "Roma" shows his sensitivity and big heart. Most upper middle class families use their staff and take them for granted. Cuaron's family looked on Cleo as a family member and gave her moral support during her personal crisis. We don't see many directors making movies about the sad, thankless lives of people who give everything they possibly can, never complain, receive little in return and are ultimately forgotten. Cuaron is the exception to the rule and I thank him for his heartfelt and touching film. I thought about it for several days after watching it - it truly haunted me. I can't say the same for most of the disposable movies out there competing for awards every year.

Netflix is huge, and they often put out great movies. But maybe you don't want to subscribe forever, and want access to your favorite movies forever?

Enter: The Criterion Collection. This is one of the best TCC sets I own. The presentation, the booklet (more like novelette), box, and special features are truly what this movie deserves.

Roma should've won Best Picture at the Oscars. I like to think that by buying this beautiful set, I'm supporting great art and workmanship (and The Criterion Collection) without having to pay $100+ per year for Netflix.

Beautiful film. I've always been a fan of this director . Y to Mama, Children of Men, I don't think he's made a misstep. Beautifully captured in black and white , and following the life of a young Mexican maid, as she works for a family in Mexico city during some turbulent years, mirroring , and essentially a tribute to the woman that helped raise him, the director takes us on an amazing journey through the life of her, and his family. Well done, and a must see , for the cinema lover.

I liked Parasite,... but... this was better. This is a movie. Parasite was a movie also... but this was more like real life. Amazing movie I don't know where to start with the little details. I can't recommend this enough. (I say "This is a movie" because I also watched "Knives Out" and thought it would have been better as an hour long TV special... screw that movie compared to ROMA! It was ok... but nothing compared to Roma.)

Schon die erste, lange Einstellung dieses Filmdramas des mexikanischen Regisseurs und Drehbuchautors Alfonso Cuarón (Jahrgang 1961, u.a. „Children of Men“ – 2006 oder „Gravity“ – 2013) prägt sich ein und ist in mehrerlei Hinsicht symbolträchtig für das Folgende: ein Pflastermuster, über das rhythmisch Wasser in kleinen Wellen schwappt und auf dem erst nach langem Hinsehen ein helleres Rechteck erkennbar wird, in dem sich der Himmel und ein Flugzeug spiegeln.

„Roma“ erzählt elegisch und kunstvoll aus dem Leben einer typischen Mittelschichtfamilie Anfang der 1970er-Jahre im Stadtteil Roma (Delegación Cuauhtémoc) der mexikanischen Hauptstadt Mexiko-Stadt, von den alltäglichen Verrichtungen und Erlebnissen einer „Muchacha“ („Mädchen“) und macht Zeitgeschichte wieder lebendig.

Cuarón widmete das Drama in Originalsprache mit Untertitelung für Spanisch und in eckigen Klammern für Mixtekisch seiner eigenen „Muchacha“ Liboria „Libo“ Rodríguez. Als „Muchachas“ werden (junge) Frauen bezeichnet, die als Personal, Dienst- oder Kindermädchen bei finanziell bessergestellten Familien arbeiten und in separaten Hinterzimmern oder auf dem Dachboden auch leben.

Die indigene Mixtekin Manita, auf mexikanisch Cleodegaria „Cleo“ Gutiérrez (Yalitza Aparicio), bestellt den Haushalt der siebenköpfigen Familie des Arztes Dr. Antonio und kümmert sich hingebungsvoll um die vier Kinder Sofi (Daniela Demesa), den mit einer verstörenden Fantasie begabten Toño (Diego Cortina Autrey), Paco (Carlos Peralta) und Pepe (Marco Graf). Cleo und die Familie leben in der „Colonia Roma“, einem 1903 nach der Idee des britischen Zirkusimpressario Edward Walter Orrin entstandenen, einst prachtvollen Viertel, das zusammen mit der „Colonia Condesa“, auf der eine Rennbahn gebaut worden war, ab den 1950er-Jahren zu einer Wohngegend für die Mittelklasse umgebaut wurde. Zu der Zeit, in der dieser Film angesiedelt ist, hatte es seinen Glanz schon eingebüßt.

Die gewohnte Ordnung und der Alltag geraten ins Wanken, als sich eines Tages der Hausherr für eine Geschäftsreise von seiner Frau Sofia (Marina de Tavira) und den Kindern verabschiedet, jedoch nicht zurückkehrt und Manita /Cleo von ihrem ersten Freund Fermín (Jorge Antonio Guerrero), der sich für den asiatischen Kampfsport begeistert, womöglich schwanger, sitzen gelassen wird…

Doch die Handlung selbst ist hier nicht das Maßgebliche, sondern die Art und Weise, wie sie geschildert wird, Eindrücke und Stimmungen entstehen, nämlich wellenförmig und mithilfe von Kontrasten, und dass persönliche Schicksale der Protagonisten, autobiografische Erinnerungen und andere Bezugnahmen des Regisseurs (etwa auf eigene Filme) und mexikanische Historie (von Erbeben über Landverteilungskämpfe bis zum für Mexikaner traumatischen „Fronleichnam-Massaker“ im Jahr 1971, bei dem Dutzende demonstrierende Studenten von einer paramilitärischen Gruppe namens „Los Halcones“ getötet wurden) miteinander verknüpft werden.

Dank der langsamen Kamerafahrten (Alfonso Cuarón und Galo Olivares), die dem Auge des Zuschauers weite, berückende Panoramabilder in Schwarz-Weiß und oft außergewöhnliche Perspektivausschnitte liefern, taucht er in die Welt Cleos, in die mexikanische Gesellschaft und ihre Geschichte ein, die wie auf Schienen nebeneinander herzulaufen scheinen und sich dennoch immer wieder kreuzen. Gemeinsam mit Cleo überquert der Zuschauer den Hinterhof, säubert den Flur von den Hinterlassenschaften des Hundes, wäscht und durchschreitet ein ums andere Mal Räume des Hauses, welche die Kamera kurz zuvor schon einmal abgetastet hat, als ahme sie den prüfenden Blick der Bediensteten nach, die sich vergewissert, ob alles gereinigt und am richtigen Ort ist. Der besseren Lichtverhältnisse wegen wurde nicht im eigentlichen damaligen Wohnhaus des Regisseurs, sondern im baugleichen gegenüber, das mit originalgetreuem Mobiliar ausgestattet wurde, gedreht und das echte an einer Stelle des Films von außen gezeigt. Der Blick über die Dächer wurde mit CGI – 3-D-Computergrafik nachgebildet. Weiter folgt der Beobachter Cleo in die Straßen der Stadt oder die mexikanische Landschaft und muss immer wieder die aus Vorder-, Mittel- und Hintergrund bestehenden Bilderschichten entschlüsseln, die einander ergänzen und parallele Erzählstränge bilden, und die Protagonisten des Films darin suchen wie Details in einem Wimmelbild.

Bis auf Marina de Tavira als Sra. Sofia Antonio sind nur Laiendarsteller zu sehen. Ein Drehbuch im eigentlichen Sinn gab es nicht, sondern kurze Erläuterungen vor den jeweiligen Szenen, wodurch „das Timing im echten Leben“ eingefangen werden konnte, was dem Film zu Authentizität verhilft. Yalitza Aparicio verleiht Cleo bei aller Ernsthaftigkeit und Dramatik jugendliche Lebensfreude und viel Wärme.

Resümee: „Roma“ ist einerseits ein ruhig beobachtendes, daher fast statisch dokumentarisch anmutendes, aus exakt getakteten, choreografischen Szenen bestehendes und bis in jede Winzigkeit hinein aufwendig gearbeitetes, andererseits ein sehr intimes, mitfühlendes, berührendes, dezentes, schlicht meisterliches Drama zum Aufsaugen über die Achterbahn des Lebens im Kleinen wie im Großen, über Bindung, Trost, die Ambivalenzen von Hierarchien und Abhängigkeiten in Bezug auf Ethnien, gesellschaftliche Klassen und Geschlecht. Verständlicherweise erfolgten zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, zum Beispiel bei den „Golden Globe Awards“ 2019 als „Bester fremdsprachiger Film“, zudem für Cuarón für die „Beste Regie“ und mit „Oscars“ in den Kategorien „Beste Regie“, „Bester fremdsprachiger Film“ und „Beste Kamera“.

PS: Im 73 Minuten umfassenden Bonusmaterial wird klar, wie persönlich und bedeutsam dieses Filmprojekt für Regisseur Alfonso Cuarón gewesen ist, denn man kann unter anderem erleben, wie ganze Straßenzüge nachgebildet und mit den passenden Autos bestückt wurden.
