My only criticism is that I was left wanting more. Don't get me wrong, you get plenty here for your money, but I'm hoping Blackford develops some of these characters in a sequel. He definitely has enough to work with, and the skill to pull it off.

The beginning of this novella was the part I liked the best. The way the story strings out the mystery of what is happening to the shops and people is VERY well handled. I started putting the pieces together about midway through the story, trying to guess the purpose of the intricate web of activity being presented. Perhaps my mind went a bit fantastic on it...alien abductions...super-soldiers...
I think what made it so great to follow was that it did well to show us what was happening, not telling us....
At the climax, however, this changes...
I felt the latter part of the tale should have fallen back the formula that was so effective in the beginning of the tale. There were still very awesome moments of action and throughout the descriptions are fantastic...I do think however that there could have been less telling us of the aftermath and more of showing us. Dialogue between characters, action playing out, would have made the declining action just as exciting as the rise towards climax.
Very effective use of technologies and chemistry that could very well be used near future...scary stuff in the pages...and I do look forward to seeing where futures novellas in this line will lead!
Troy Blackford is a master of the short story (check out his blogs for excellent "bite sized thrillers"), & the macabre, dark side of society.
This first book of three sets out the story in perfect tandem with the characters: cold, calculating & frightening in scope.
Remeniscent of writers like Straub, Garner & S King, I am looking forward to diving into the next installment. Highly recommend for those who love a good thriller.
If you are in the mood for a couple hours of entertainment, pick up a copy of this and enjoy the ride. Good stuff. The second of this trilogy, Emergent Pattern, was just released as well.

Blackford is an amazing author who truly gets what suspense means and knows how to write a kick@$$ story.
