* It touches on a lot of areas but is very shallow, lacking in any depth.
* It uses language very loosely, which lacks the precision that I feel is essential in this genre.
* It makes a lot of blanket statements that may sound good but lack intellectual rigor.
* There are several instances of relatively blatant virtue signalling, at the expense of precision.
* Many of the anecdotes only very loosely fit the topic of discussion.
Overall, the book reads more like a self-help book with the intent of keeping people happy. If I were 15 years old, I could probably learn a lot from this book. Still, I would prefer a more precise, less preachy book, even for a 15-year-old. I will tell you, they sure fooled me with that cover and all the positive reviews when I got here. On the bright side, I noticed only one typo (page 148).
Recognizing that a good deal of my thinking is done without my approval, I have been going back through this book to try and understand how my aware thinking interacts with/controls/answers to the background processes. I have not been very successful in finding a clear discussion of just how this interaction occurs. Schuster seems to have made a very deliberate choice to only discuss those findings that are firmly supported by research.
The book leaves little room for speculation on how we can use what little awareness of our thinking that we do have to improve the automatic responses that dictate the majority of our actions and make most of our decisions.
This is a thoughtful book that will make you examine how you think.
There is a difference between true intuition, and snap judgments made from cognitive biases. No matter whether we justify those as "gut feelings" or not. One is based on a clear knowing that precludes cognitive awareness and the other is based on hasty, impulsive, and sloppy thinking. This book will help to examine these thoughts critically and select the good thoughts from the bad.
This book covers all the basics, including how to develop a healthy dose of skepticism, and what skepticism actually is (as some people tend to view it as a negative thing, as it is being somehow pessimistic, which it is not).
I'm very pleased with this book and happy with my purchase.
The book has plenty of examples and research to back up the data and prove that, without a doubt, mastering your critical thought process is an avenue that carries you towards a successful outcome.
This book is great if you struggle with compulsive actions and thinking; it makes the mind more patient and puts an end to snap decisions without thinking first. As you read deeper into this topic, you will gain greater confidence in yourself to make core decisions based on sound logic and noit just the impulsive mind. You will be able to seperate the junk from the gold and have greater trust in yourself to do the right thing.
A definite recommend!
