First, after talking about it to friends and posting videos online, I've had a lot of people say "so, it's just a sampler? How does it compare to the OP-1?" and that's the misconception... unlike the OP-1 which is a "fixed synth" as well as a sampler (and a very nicely designed one at that) the Organelle is NOT a sampler or a synth; it is a Sound Computer. One that can be programmed to do anything you wish within the audio realm. So it can be a 2 Oscillator Virtual Analog synth if you wish, or a 6 Oscillator FM synth, or a Sampler with Granular Processing, or a Quad Delay effects box for your guitar... in other words, it's not JUST a synth or a sampler, it's anything you want it to be.
But that's the caveat... to really get the most out of the Organelle, you should want to dive in and start learning the Pure Data visual programming language that it runs, that way you can make your own patches from scratch. Though the Organelle comes with a few really nice examples of what it can do, and there is a pretty good (and growing) user community making many more free patches, I've seen more than a couple of people become disappointed with their purchase on forums because they thought it was a full blown sampler that can do everything they wanted... and it can be, but you'll have to put the work in and make it yourself to get exactly what you want.
That said, there are quite a few fun example patches that are quite playable, and I myself have been diving into Pure Data to see what I can come up with (it's really not that hard of a programming language.) The only negatives which caused me to take one star away (though I really would have only taken half a star if I could) is the sound quality isn't all that great; probably due to the digital to audio convertors they are using, and the menu system is a little bit fiddly when you have a lot of patches loaded and you are having to scroll around to find things... but other than that, the fun factor, portability and the incredibly wide range of things you can do with this (again, it can be a synth, sampler, drum machine, effects processor for external gear and yes, even an alarm clock!) makes this one of the most exciting pieces of gear to come out in quite a long while... at least for me!
The only thing I know of that is close to this is the Monome Aleph which looks nicer, but is more than double the price, hard to find, and apparently much harder to code for as well. The Organelle, by comparison, is more immediate and definitely more fun!
The Video I've included in my review is a Karplus-Strong based patch I am working on to simulate a guitar strumming... since there was nothing else on the Organelle like that (an example of how you can just create your own what-ever-you-want thing on the Organelle!)
I bought my organelle with the intent to record with it and incorporate into a live set. For producing i think it offers a lot of unique sounds, but for live use it is an absolute pain in the ass.
I can’t help but think they were trying to make a homage to the op-1 but this thing is 10x clunkier, way less useful, and sounds pretty lackluster.
