Ideal for 5 to 6 People Rival's 6 Quart Round CrockPot/Slow Cooker for the busy family
Ideal for a large family or a dinner party, this round CrockPot from Rival is cleanly designed and simple to operate. One dial turns to three heat settings, low, high, and keep warm for serving, and a red light indicates the power is on. The heavy stoneware crock lifts out of the heating base for easy cleaning thanks to a stick-resistant coating, and is attractive enough to serve from right at the table. While the crock is safe for use in the microwave and dishwasher, it is not intended for use on a stovetop or under a broiler.
With two cook settings, low and high, the pot can slow cook a wide variety of stews, roasts, and soups, recipes for which are included in the owner's guide. The glass lid, also dishwasher-safe, sends moisture back into the pot while at the same time allows contents to be viewed. Easy to carry by means of heat-resistant, flange-style handles, the pot measures 10 inches high by 12 inches in diameter (14 inches with handles). Rival covers the slow cooker with a one-year warranty. --Ann Bieri

I'd say we used it weekly over the course of the first two or three months we had it, during home renovation, but afterward maybe.....maybe once a month.
The size is good and we have a family of six so we are usual making a large meal, filling the pot. 6 quarts held anything we made in it.
I am replacing it because of the chipping. Otherwise the heater, etc. works fine. But for the price, I would say I am more than happy wit 7 or so years of service.
A little preparation, like browning meat, makes a big difference in the final product, but overall it couldn't be easier. I also like being able to serve a hot meal without using the oven or the stovetop in the summer heat. The ceramic insert cleans up really easily.
Get a good cookbook, so far the best one I've found on amazon.com is "Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cook Book" for regular cooking and the Lara Brody slow cooker cook book if you're a really serious cook.
I am so impressed with this that I ordered a second, smaller 3.5 quart Rival Crock Pot!
The warm setting doesn't get hot enough to cook with so that's not a solution.
The High setting is like cooking with nuclear reactor.
This unit is pretty big at 6 quarts. Great for making a batch of stock but certainly too big for dinner for two people.
UPDATE 04/03/13: I decided to be reckless and used it several more times without anything bad happening. It looks like the glazing is cracked and not necessarily the crock itself. I'm changing my rating from 1 star to 2 since it works but don't feel right in giving it more stars since it really shouldn't have a crack at all.
I'm going to dump this for another brand.
the big ceramic pot alone retains heat for a good while, i only sous vide with it, i have made smoked ribs with it though!
yup, get some wood chips, soak them for 30mins put them in foil, punch a few holes, put it in the crock pot with NO WATER, then just lay the meat to be smoked on top of it, set for low and 12hours later, you get smoked goodness.

Luckily the pot was not in use. Just sitting under cabinet and heard it shatter!Read more
