Crónicas negras (Spanish Edition) Paperback – September 12, 2013

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

The quality of journalism, especially narrative journalism, is as good in this part of the world as the politics are bad. There are just some terms -- "violence against women," "impunity," "broken prisons," "corruption," "drug trafficking," "gang killings" -- that don't really resonate or even register until you see what they really look like up close. This is a collection of narratives from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua that begins with an extended account of a teenage girl in San Salvador raped by 18 adolescent gang members over several hours. The story follows the rape and the victim's eventual recovery; the author interviews the victim's school principal who is too afraid of the gangs to report the crime. This is what violence against women looks like. A story about two college kids killed by corrupt police in Honduras -- one turned out to be the university rector's son -- this is what impunity looks like. A story from Guatemala about how farmers removed from their land by opportunistic drug trafficking families are now conveniently being called traffickers themselves as an excuse to remove them from the lands they've since been forced to occupy. An incredible story traces the origins of the gang Barrio 18, which became a force in El Salvador in the 1990s, and its infighting and near-dissolution. I think that because this is journalism, not academic commentary, a student with an intermediate or higher level of Spanish can take this on in a Kindle edition that has a Spanish-English dictionary. That's how I read it, anyway. It would be well worth the effort.

I'm very familiar with El Faro's reporting and try to read everything they publish in the Sala Negra. I'm not familiar with a better source for investigative crime reporting in Latin America, or for that matter, anywhere in the world.

This is a must read for anyone with an interest in Central America.
