SImmons fashions a mystery that embraces and embellishes the mythic, larger-than-life presence of Hemingway. He would have liked the book.
Ernest Hemingway allegedly ran a Spy Ring known as the Crook Factory from his home in Cuba during WWII. When J. Edgar Hoover tasks Agent Joe Lucas with going down to Cuba to investigate (and "take care" of Hemingway, if necessary), Agent Lucas does not know what to expect.
What transpires in this wonderfully conceived novel is a tale of Agents, Double-Agents, Nazis and Commies - and no one appears to be who they claim. Mix in several real-life characters like Ian Fleming, Ingrid Bergman, Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich and you have a story that reads like historical non-fiction meets James Bond.
Rumor of a film version starring Johnny Depp as Joe Lucas are in the works. Can't wait!
