Jack may have been around a long time, but he is new to me and, I would guess, many others. I am planning on reading more Patterson novels...both James and Jack!
Set in a small town and close-knit community, where everything you do is known about by the rest of the community, and where just about anything out of the ordinary is big news, a series of local and somewhat odd deaths have occurred and these events see a young reporter and journalist undertaking investigation work to determine the truth. The truth however is not so easy to find with lots of hurdles to overcome and many false leads. Just about all the locals seem to have got involved to a greater or lesser extent; making the path to the truth a little cloudy shall we say.
Keeping the suspense is actually rather well done and the amount of characters that are involved help to conceal the outcome especially well, so to that extent a big "thumbs up".
Where I would make some critical comments is in the actual writing, or at least part of it but I am trying to not be too critical as this is Jack Patterson's first novel. I would not say he tends to ramble a little but that perhaps is the only fair way to describe it as I felt there was often too much detail away from the real focus of the story line.
All the same, if "thrillers" are your type of read then it is still well worthwhile and you could do a whole lot worse.
Rating: PG 13...no sex or offensive language, just some mild violence
Cal's dream had almost died until he stumbled upon a pattern involving high school athletes. One athlete dying of mysterious cause is newsworthy, but three in 24 hours smells of something sinister, and Cal is determined to find out what is going on. He enlists the aid of Christy Mendoza and together they set out to find the cause of the test and unwittingly stumbles upon his secret that had been hidden in their little town for many years.
Not knowing who they can trust and without any investigative experience, these two amateurs, fumble along trying to follow the threads of a web that proves to get more tangled as they pull each one. The terror and sheer horror of what they uncover boggles the mind, and proves to be just the beginning of their own troubles, more murders occur and soon they realize, whoever is behind the deaths, what them dead, too.
Cross Hairs is a book that gives us a different view of rural America. It's a lot more than the rich get richer, it's about absolute power and what some will do to maintain it. This is very enjoyable book combining sports with an incredible mystery. A page turner that you will not be able to put down. If you like murder, mystery, and mayhem, I highly recommend you try Jack Patterson's, Cross Hairs, today.
