- Sturdy Design, Heavy and Clamps well
- Holds well if you've made no mistake drilling
- Very high tolerance, wiggles a lot, it can move up to half an inch when drilling down
- If the drill bit slips during a plunge with the drill press, it will move out of position
- Turns well in one direction, but not the other
- Packaging is not great
First thing I did was take the vise apart and clean it, yeah I know it is new, you have to deal with it.
I deburred the shim plates and the slides and lubed everything probably to excess. Bottom line, it works pretty well and the price is better than the "tool liquidators".
I bought this to use with a 10 inch drill press, I realize it is sacrilege but I cut off the back mounting tabs, I needed the extra clearance
With 0 shipping damage and after adjusting it: All the shafts are bent, all the handles are bent, none of the holes are on-center or properly drilled. The lead screws are all bent. It really looks like these are built with nothing but a file and a vague idea of what a cross slide vice should look like. The lash is unbelievable; one axis is almost a full turn of the handle before it starts moving.
It does function, kinda, as a drill vice, which is why it's worth two stars and not one. No matter what you do, you will not be using this for precision work. No matter how bad you are imagining this to be, it is worse. I wanted this just for one simple project drilling (not milling) aluminum and I am still disappointed.
Don't get me wrong, I am now happy with this vise, but I did put about 4 good hours into accurising this unit. I combined the vise with a Harbor Freight 10" drill press for a "light" milling machine, and for that option it is working just right. I can run up to 3/8" end mills, and before I forget...the chuck that comes with this unit is GREAT....it is 5/8" and heavy duty.
After the clean up and general redo, I can hold about .010 with ease, and any more then that takes very much attention. I am happy with this purchase, and there are VERY few other options in this price range that will get you the results this can.
have fun, G
the side plates need to be adjusted to keep the shaking to a minimum, but when you run an endmill in a climbing cut pattern it reduces vibration.
all in all, it works good.
