Editorial Reviews

"Crossing Cultures" is a 13-minute video, designed to improve cross-cultural communication in health care encounters.

It features real-life health care providers and patients at the Center for International Health, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and at the clinics of Emory Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. In the video, Dr. Patricia Walker, and her colleagues Rob Carlson PA-C and Carlos Franco MD, interact with immigrant patients from Ethiopia, Sudan, Cambodia, Laos and Russia, demonstrating how to apply a simple model known as “LEARN” to any cross-cultural encounter.

LEARN is an acronym that makes it easy to remember five vitally important things that every health care provider should do for every patient: Listen, Explain, Acknowledge, Recommend, and Negotiate.

Crossing Cultures was devised as a training video and can be easily incorporated into discussions about culturally competent care, health care disparities, language access, patient safety and more. At our website, you’ll find a sample agenda and handout to help plan a 60-minute workshop incorporating the video.
