I loved this book and can see that Shelby will be going places as mysterious Blake is in the picture and might involve Shelby in intelligence. Exciting!
In the meantime Shelby is still happily married with kids. And there lies my 'problem' with the series. It is getting more obvious that Shelby is attracted to Ramos and he reciprocates. I totally adore Ramos and love the UST between them. Actually I 'ship' this like crazy. I live for the Shelby/Ramos moments. My favorite book is the one where they are in Orlando together. BUT.... What about Chris, her totally lovable hubby?? She has kids with him!
How is Colleen ever going to resolve this? I find myself secretly hoping something happens to Chris but then I slap myself. But it is also starting to get weird. Shelby is starting to fall for Ramos, people notice (Joey, his wife) and I love the motorcycle jacket thing. Owwwwwww. Well I guess poor Chris has got to go and then a time jump for Shelby to get over him... HINT HINT....
Okay. Fast forward to present. 5 years later, and I have just devoured the 7th book in the series, Crossing Danger, as if I were a Hoover run amok. Way out-read my reading budget. Nearly ended up falling asleep at my desk for three nights running because I stayed up so late to see what would happen to Shelby, Ramos, Chris, Uncle Joey, Billie-Jo...
Here's the evolution: I have actually caught myself wondering what Shelby is up to now - will she go to Paris? What does Bates have in mind for her? Will she end up a Karate kicking soccer-mom-turned spy? Who can read minds?
And then I catch myself, because I realize I am thinking of Shelby like a FRIEND, A LIVING BREATHING one, not like a character in a book.
We've come a long way, baby.
Author Colleen Helme was relatively obscure when she created Shelby Nichols. She had written a few books, but nothing like this. Along comes this idea to take a Patricia Arquette-like "The Medium" character, put it on steroids, and bring it to life. A real life soccer-mom turned sleuth - with a twist of mind-reading. The results have been fantastic, enjoyable, breathtaking, page-turningly wonderful, and have actually impacted my life.
5 years ago my life involved traveling to a different country every two weeks. One of the reasons why I got Carrots, Fast Money, Lie or Die, was so that I could read something enjoyable on long flights, as I don't sleep well on planes. Shelby has traveled with me from Rio to Riyadh, from LA to London. And more than just a great read, she has become larger than life.
I have said many wonderful things about Colleen in previous reviews, doubtless I will say many more. As other reviewers have commented, I don't know how she does it, but the series continues to get better and better. Crossing Danger is no exception. It is a great read full of intrigue, danger, mystery, interlaced plots and sub-plots, and now Shelby is not just reading minds, once again she seems to be getting obscure clues from the great beyond. It is a rip-roaring thrill a minute ride through organized and dis-organized crime, assassins, missing kids and SOB policemen. Just like your and my life, right?
So why are you reading this review? You aren't so worried about the few bucks, are you? Nah, that's a Mochachino, or an iced Latte. You're worried about will you enjoy it. Will it be entertaining? Will it grip you? Will it keep you on the edge of your seat? Can you escape into Shelby's world for a while? Can you figure out who's doing what to whom? Here's my take on it: This book will bring you and give you much pleasure and enjoyment, long after the price is forgotten. And unlike the one and done of coffee, you get to come back and savor this one again, as many times as you like. I would recommend this book without reservation to anyone who loves reading and adventure. But do yourself a favor: Read the series, or at least the first book or two so you know who's who and how they all go together. It makes the ride much more enjoyable. And you're going to want to start at the beginning anyway once you get into it, why wait?
Narrator, Wendy Tremont King is a great complement to Colleen Helme’s book. Her unique intonations bring to life Colleen’s well developed characters and Shelby’s world. The character dynamics were even more developed in this book and added a lot of humor to the story. The plot is complex, engaging, and keeps the reader guessing what’s going to happen next. The author’s mix of action, mystery, romance, and adventure was well done and extremely entertaining. The author expertly switches between internal and external dialogue and King smoothly handles them with a mixture of humor and pizzazz. Readers who have read the other books in the Shelby Nichols adventures won’t be disappointed. Newcomers to the Shelby scene will be able to easily pick up on the story line, but it is recommended people at least read the one before this, because it builds on the last book. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a fun, paranormal mystery with a bit of romance intermixed.
