While the underlying marketing of this novel is science fiction, and the story does take place in the future in space, I would characterize this one as a horror novel. The author does a great job of setting the stage for a series of events in the future and making you feel as if you are right there in the middle of the action. This one was a fairly quick read and took me about two hours – but I didn’t put it down after I started it.

The author leaves the ending in a rather neat place – you can either say the story is done, or did he set the stage for a continuation of the story? I’d be fine either way, but if there is a continuation of the story I would grab it and start reading it. If you like early Stephen King or modern day Scott Nicholson horror-type novels I believe you would like this one.

William Massa's fourth book is an intense sci-fi thriller that hits the ground running. We meet Faith while dreaming, her mind becoming lucid as the effects of the cryo unit she's been stored in begin to wear off. She doesn't understand why she is the only passenger who has awakened, or where the crew are. She begins investigating, only to find that she is not the only crew member that has been awakened, and someone, or something, is hunting these early risers through the ship.
What I like about this book, in fact what I like about all four of Massa's books, is the brevity. Could this have been a fascinating, cerebral, and horrifying journey through space that pondered mans place in the universe? Yes it could have. But instead Massa gives us a quick, concise read that keeps us on the edge of our seat throughout. He always manages to plant seeds in the narrative that seem to serve the one purpose, only to grow later into a mind boggling plot twist. He does it with skill, like a magician who directs our attention one place while doing something simple and haunting in another. His story moves, his characters are well developed, his twists surprise and keep us turning the pages.
While not the cerebral journey I thought it would be, Massa did deliver a rousing action thriller set in deep space, far away from home with nobody to rely on but yourself to survive. In less than 150 pages he managed to fit in not only a full, suspenseful story, but such grand science-fiction themes such as man's base animal nature vs. technology and man's far reaching scientific hubris, as well as human themes like responsibility, courage, our desire to run away from our pasts, and our prejudice/ability to make that nearly impossible to achieve.

A reformed criminal fleeing her past finds herself in a truly terrifying situation, trapped on a space vessel where small groups of passengers are being awakened from hyper-sleep for reasons that become chillingly clear. This page turner takes the reader on a dark voyage of survival. The atmosphere is eerie, the action is taut, and the lead is an interesting character. Don't read this late at night.

First let me state that I received this book as a gift from the author because I am on his mailing-list.

Crossing the Darkness is a book that you will not want to put down until the end. This darkly atmospheric story opens with a woman awakening from cryo-sleep aboard a starship taking workers to mine asteroids. She tries to call the bridge to get help but there is no answer. Trying to find the bridge she ends up on a habitation deck where she discovers a dying man, brutally stabbed. There is nothing she can do to help him. Then she finds the crew. They are dead and have been for some time.

The woman is captured by another colonist and taken to the bridge where others have taken refuge. There is a killer aboard this ship who will kill every living being if they cannot find a way to stop him. This monster kills indiscriminately and without emotion. All 4,000 colonists in cryo-sleep are doomed unless two people can find a way to end the madness.

Author William Massa's fourth book is an exciting combination of horror, and cyber-punk science fiction. His imagination has created a tale of cat and mouse that builds to a terrifying climax.

If you like techno-thrillers, read this book. You won't be disappointed.

Crossing the Darkness is William Massa’s fourth book. Though a separate story from his last book, “Silicon Man,” he takes the theme of the technologically enhanced human to the next terrifying level. But this book isn’t mired down in techno-speak. It’s fast-paced, electrifying, and will keep you looking over your shoulder at any little sound.

Imagine waking up after being cryogenically frozen to face an inhuman adversary who is always one step ahead with its own agenda for the human race, and you are an integral part of its plan.

The heroine, Fath Cadena, has been through a lot in her life, struggling to maintain her humanity, not letting life beat her down. She’s managed to endure it all using her wits and developing the inner strength to survive. Without the past, she won’t be able to survive the horrors awaiting her.

William Massa has done a wonderful job of developing his characters so that every thought, emotion and action is believable. Yet the pace never slows down. Like the characters, you don’t seem to get a moment to breathe…… and then….

There is something in Mr. Massa’s writing which lingers in the mind. Once you catch your breath, you find yourself thinking about the characters, then thinking about characters in his other novels. If you enjoy a good read and a well constructed plot, this is an author for you.

I received an advance copy of the book to read and review. I’ve read all of Mr. Massa’s books and they never disappoint.
