There were some technical details about climbing that I didn't understand, but that did not detract at all from the tightly woven plot. I admire the character of the protagonist, Nick Dixon, and his relationships with his co-workers. I believe there are seven books in the series now, and I intend to read all of them. A very satisfying read!

I'm a little surprised at all of the five star reviews. I felt that Nick Dixon was a one demential character with very little if any personality. I really didn't care if he solved the case or not nor did I care who the killer was or why they'd dine it. I won't be reading any of the others.

Well written and refreshing! This makes a change from the typical cop stories out of the US. The climbing angle was interesting, though I was afraid that I would not understand it initially. Good solid detective work that formed the central part of the story makes me want to get into the second in the series pretty soon!

Really enjoyed this first novel in the DI Nick Dixon series. Well written, nicely paced and great characters. On one of the blurbs this series is called "highly addictive" and I would completely agree...I've already read through 3 in this series and have thoroughly enjoyed each one.
I'm trying to pace myself because I will be sad when I've finished all of them and impatiently waiting for the next

I have to say I was skeptical at first because I realized it was a mystery surrounding a climber of great heights and some of the terminology I didn't understand. However, once you get past that there was a pretty good mystery with a bit of a twist towards the end. I enjoyed the book and would read another of this author's books.

this is an excellent first book of a new series for me. I will definitely be following this series as I found the characters engaging and interesting and the mystery and how it was solved quite entertaining. I learned more about rock climbing than I ever thought to know in my life but found it informative and, of course, to the point in the resolution of the mystery. My number one son has been a climber for a good part of his adult life so I was not unfamiliar with some of the technology and equipment but, had I been unacquainted with these things, I am sure I could have easily understood the terminology and action depicted.
The mystery itself had quite a few good twists and turns that even an inveterate mystery reader as myself did not see coming and some of which greatly enhanced the delineation of the characters involved..
this book was most excellently done and I hope to enjoy more books by this author.

I enjoyed this first book in a series and will read the subsequent books. Easy read with genuine characters who may not be perfect but realistic. The pace is quick and the crimes and criminals are bad but not evil. There's a degree of compassion for some of the wrongdoing and yet comfort in reading that their actions have accountability.

I felt this was a good book-not very good or great, but good. I must say that I enjoyed its short length. Sometimes when I look for some "light reading", it refers to both content and length. I thought the main character was likeable, interesting and fairly well developed. I thought the story line was good, and moved quickly without loosing an element of suspense. I was disappointed in the fact that the book involved the death of a climber, and a bit of jargon was employed. (Nixon is also a climber.) However, there was little explanation of the terms, or a view for the reader to understand some of the intricacies of the sport. Fiction is often made more interesting by educating the reader on some factual element that is necessary to the story, but unfamiliar to most. Although this review is certainly "lukewarm", I have ordered two more of the Nick Dixon novels and hope to enjoy them both. .

Yes, it is. I don't do plots in my reviews. If you want the plot read the book. So what would I like: possibly more character development, the detective he asks out on a date tall, short; nice legs or those of a footballer; please give the readers hint more than two bottles of wine. Need to clean up the diabetes thing. Is he secretly shoving a needle in his thigh or he has a pump.

Maybe I am being picky but as someone says the devil is in the details. The 87th Precinct series by McBain succeeds in this. Those are my complaints but I liked the book. Made you think. I have the second book and am going to read it right now and I do want more from the author I swill check to see if he hasn't already. Already done so.

This book is so well written that it does not seem like an author's first book. I will be reading others. The plot is well executed and the characters are vivid. Nick Dixon, the main character, is a genuine detective with a persistent attitude to solve the crime. Cannot wait to begin the next book by Damien Boyd.
