And to make this review even longer (and to show how much of a nerd I am), we went dressed as the main characters of IT Crowd to a convention earlier this year. We were recognized on the street before we even made it to the convention center and in one of the sessions, two middle school-age children in front of us recognized us. Now that's good parenting!
If you've never seen the show, watch it! If you have, there is really no reason for you to be reading reviews, is there? Stop questioning, just buy it. And as far as Amazon is concerned, they have great service, REALLY fast shipping, and I've never had an issue.
The IT Crowd passes both of my 'tests' for whether or not I buy a DVD for a movie or TV show. My first test is, 'Is it still entertaining after several viewings?'. After watching every episode of The IT Crowd via streaming, from all four seasons **multiple times**, I still jumped at the chance to get them on DVD (from a reseller on Amazon). After popping in the DVDs I still found myself laughing out loud at times.
My second test is extra content. There isn't a lot, but considering that each season contains only 6 episodes, it's just the right amount. The details packed into the DVD menus are intricate and charming. Most of the menus are shown as old school video games or something PC-related which play in the background featuring the show characters. And there's a '1337' subtitle option (Leet Speak) on disc 1, which programmers will appreciate on an entirely different level.Read more ›
From the opening credits based on early eighties computer graphics (anyone else out there remember when a Commodore 64 was serious high tech?) to the perfect cast (Cris O'Dowd as the slovenly, resentful Roy; Richard Ayoade as the glorious ur-nerd Moss, and Katherine Parkinson as the manic tech-ignoramus Jen who runs the IT department) to the belly-busting scripts by Graham Linehan (Father Ted, Black Books) there isn't a single misstep. True, some episodes are not quite as funny as others... but some flavors of ice cream aren't my absolute favorites, either. They're still ice cream, and they're still good.
Whether skewering workplace soaps (Lots of sexy people not doing much work and having affairs), bemoaning the lack of computer savvy of people who make their livings using them (Have you tried turning it off and on again? Is it plugged in?), playing with gender roles, poking gently - or not so gently - at accepted social rituals, or watching the smoker's area turn into Gorky Park, this show hits it mark with accuracy that never feels just mean.
Meltdown has now been joined by episodes like The Speech and The Work Outing for sheer comic genius. I am delighted to find so much hilarity in another Britcom.
Look, just get the series. You'll never regret it. And you may never laugh so hard again.
