The Best Kind of Theory There Is!

This is a remarkable book and the fact that there are hardly any reviews is disappointing. This book is about examining the roles that political parties play in progress, and is a bit dense. Honestly, though, it's the most readable theory I've come across that actually makes points and developments and doesn't just rephrase old material. Jodi Dean is unfortunately self-referential. so I'd recommend visiting some of her other works to understand her points. It's theory, but it is built off of the past and aims for the future- the best kind of theory there is!

Any person who says this book makes no sense or lacks evidence seems to have missed the expansive references Dean makes throughout- there is plenty of content she recommends for the confused and unconvinced!!!

Unreadable nonsense

I wondered why no one had reviewed this book until I tried to read it. It is unreadable nonsense. The author is trying to revive Communism but has no coherent argument. According to the index, she mentions social democracy only once in the book and pans it, "nearly completely dismantled by neoliberalism and now confined to a certain fantasy of Sweden". This should give you an idea of the striking ignorance of the author. I don't know where the author's preference for communism comes from, family or books or fantasies. Thirty nine countries have called themselves communist or socialist, all of them have been dictatorships and police states. The 8 social democracies are always rated the best places in the world to live, Norway was just rated the happiest country in the world. The reasons for this difference is quite clear. When a government makes economic activities illegal, they create the need for enforcement and the concentration of power, hence a police state and corruption and dictatorship. Capitalist countries have no monopoly on corruption. The advantage of social democracies is the balance of power between strong pubic and private sectors and strong unions. The Nordic countries have unions that represent as many as 80% of workers. There are problems but nothing like the communist dictatorships this author defends.

But Dean has no use for evidence or data of any sort. She is a theorist of the purest and worst kind. I will suggest to the people in my public library that they remove this book, not because of ideology but because of quality.
