Noelle is a woman of business. Born heir to a department store, the likes of which Macy's has never seen, she is expected to act and comport herself a certain way. So of course she wants to escape her life for just a night, she goes out and her world changes, for better or worse only she can tell us. She meets a man who the reader only knows as Nameless. She has a semi-fling with him and never sees him again. Fast forward 3 years into the future. She has a run in with Penn, a man who reminds her of her lost stranger. Let the story begin from there.
So far, typical, but there is nothing wrong with that. I am fully okay with this storyline, what I am not okay with is how everything plays out from here. For a book to hold a reader's interest it must have a purpose. A shared goal that the reader and protagonist work towards. Without that both are left adrift in aimless chapters. So what's the purpose of this book? I would think the mystery lies in whether or not Penn and Nameless are the same person. I felt like that is what I wanted to know the whole time. Well do I know that having read this whole book? No. No I do not. I can hazard a guess but every time Winters pushes the reader to draw a conclusion on this point she pushes just as hard in the other direction. Like she's trying to create doubt in the reader so that she can draw the storyline out. But all that that does is leaves a dissatisfied taste in my mouth. What was I reading for if not that?
So wait, lets try another purpose. If I wasn't supposed to be reading towards that mystery perhaps I was simply reading for the sexy times/relationship between Penn and Elle. Maybe I was supposed to be connected to them, to see their hate blossom into something more. Maybe sexual tension was supposed to be the driving force. Well if that is the case how can Penn as a main character be so unlikable?!! He is simply horrible. He's mean, he's arrogant. He is rude and demeaning to the protagonist. He uses her and dumps her on multiple occasions. And just when you think he's going to do something nice he bails at the last moment. Without any kind of redeeming quality Penn's hotness factor drops to not. I am no stranger to alpha-holes. I can totally get with the bad boy with a gooey interior. But Penn has no such thing. He's rotten through and through. So looks like I've struck out again in terms of purpose. Sigh.
There wasn't even any relief with the secondary characters. For one there is no need to for a villain when the hero isn't a hero. Truthfully I have no hope that Penn with save our protagonist from that overly dramatic cliffhanger. And it's because over the course of the story Winters failed to instill in her readers a connection to him. What about Penn in the previous 300 pages would make me think he would do anything nice for Elle? Nothing. So what reason do I, as the reader, have to believe in him? I don't have one.
I don't even want to get started on her father, the completely clueless man who in Elle's eyes still deserves a 'father of the year' award. He seems to have no problem supporting this clearly dysfunctional relationship. He doesn't seem to notice any warning signs or try to step in and help his daughter get out of the relationship that he all but threw her into. If Winters wants me to believe that Elle's father would support Penn over Elle then fine but she needs to write the story that way. Give them a backstory. Where to they know each other from? Did Penn do something for him as a favor which gives him credibility? Does Penn have dirt on the family that holds Elle's father in thrall? I need something!!
I really didn't expect that much from this book. I just needed at least one of the following: A.) a reason to like Penn, B.) the mystery solved C.) plausible motivation. Any one would have gotten this book a higher rating than I gave it. As it is there is a sequel to supposedly wrap this up. Unfortunately I don't trust Winters to give me any kind of satisfying resolution.
Nameless, he's a man that has lived on the streets and on the fateful day saved Elle's life. After having their night come to an abrupt end all those years ago Elle can't seem to get her mind off Nameless who in her mind is her prince charming.
Years later Elle is being pushed together into relationships by her father since he wants her to find true love. She's told her father she will give up looking for Nameless only she hasn't. She can't seem to move on to be with another man when that man those three years ago saved her life and showed her the best night in her life. Now she's battling things out with two men, Greg who is the childhood friend she's grown up with and knows to be a bit of a player. Then there is Penn Everett who has hit things off with her father one evening and is determined to make Elle want him. Only Penn has a secret. Question is will Elle discover what Penn is hiding and if she does will she leave him??
An amazing story that you just don't want to put down. So intense and leaves you on the edge of your seat!
Top international reviews
Crown of Lies has passion, drama, and the almighty Penn Everett. I loved the story so much, especially the chemistry between Noelle and Penn.
The chemistry is palpable between Elle and Penn; you can literally feel it when you read it. It makes the book even more exciting, and include that with Noelle’s need for independence in the Big Apple, and Everett's use of spinning lies into the truth.
Noelle’s character is strong when it comes to her thoughts and her business, but vulnerable when out in the big, bad world. It makes her feel human to the reader. Also, her love for her father is undeniable - everything Elle thinks about, she considers her father's thoughts on it, but sometimes, that gets in the way of her independence.
Penn is, well... a mystery. A sexy, ruthless mystery. You want to know more about Penn, and see what's behind the mask. Also, he is incredibly loyal to those that show the same courtesy, but doesn't show his feelings completely, even when it comes to his vulnerable side, but a few slip out, and it makes him more irresistible each time.
And Greg!! Don't let me start on Greg!
Crown of Lies gets a five star round of applause from me. It's sexy, dramatic, and will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. It's something that you should read, especially if you're a fan of Pepper's work.
I can't wait for more! Bring it on!
Until Pepper of course.
Now I seem to have found a love of ‘her’ dark, and with it a need to devour every book she has ever written.
After having read her other work, I expected this to be along the same lines. It’s not.
We still have an incredibly sexy alpha who is battling his own demons, but Penn is not like Q, or Jethro or Elder - and it’s for that reason I love Pepper so much.
This book is less dark, but still packs a heavy punch. I loved where this story took me, I loved getting to know Penn and Elle and I loved reading something a little softer from Pepper.
I loved the twists and turns and I loved that these characters were different from any I’ve met so far. I can’t wait to see where book 2 takes me.
She continues to awe me with her exceptional talent to draw me in with her story telling, No other author has captured my attention, or demanded I hand over my heart to her characters as regularly as Pepper does. I go in willingly, and find myself needing to be dragged out kicking and screaming once I’ve finished.
Pepper … you are my Queen. Why didn't I read your words sooner?
To be nearly beat up and raped and then to meet the one person she falls in love with on the same night and then loose him is enough for anyone to have barriers when it comes to me.
Penn Everett, I thought I had him all worked out, arrogant liar, manipulator, but sexy and thrilling all at the same time. I guessed he was nameless but then a twist of events makes me think otherwise.
I cannot wait to read the conclusion to this, I hope am wrong and Belle finds her happiness.
This book is amazing and brilliantly written , not my usual type i go for but I'm glad I did as I loved it .
It centres around Elle or Noelle , a shy heiress whose only friends are her cat , father and staff at his department store , Belle Elle . All her life she's been groomed to take over the company and this is hard for her to take . So on her 19th birthday , she decides to be free and go out on her own and what happens changes her life forever.
I want give anymore away but it really is amazing and worth reading .
I thought it was a little slow to get going but as you get further in to the book you see it's an absolute necessity to the story line. The author goes into great depth to set the scene which at first does seem like overkill.
Noelle (Elle) Charlston is the CEO of a department store; Belle Elle. Whilst her character is strong, determined and can hold her own in a boardroom she is also a naive 22 year old that knows nothing about men and is still a virgin desperate to have a relationship, someone who loves her and can stand by her side.
Enter the enigmatic Penn Everett, from that point the story becomes addictive and I really need to know Penns secret. So many times I became frustrate with Elle shouting just ask the damn questions already. Just when you think you have it all worked out, there are twists, turns a plenty and I just know nothing is going to finish as it seems. I think this author is very clever and has crafted a very skilled novel of intrigued, mysteries leaving more questions asked than answered! With every revelation comes another hundred questions and I'm so damn upset that I have to wait another month to get the answers.
Just to capivate the reader further... Penn Everett is hot, everybody needs a Penn Everett in their life. This book has my head spinning. Bravo Pepper Winters I'm in awe and can't wait for the second part.
Elle- protected, rich, spoilt, but you can't help but feel for her and her protected but comfortable life. Likeable, feisty and vulnerable.
Nameless- a mystery that will keep you hoping and guessing.
Pepper writes with passion and brings words on the page to life. Can't wait for Throne of Truth, thank God it's not long. A brilliant five star feast for lovers of a dark romance, loved it <3
Anyway, the ending--as usual, by the author--is a giant cliff-hanger, so I've just purchased book 2 because as confused as I am by the whole thing I'm hoping that everything will be revealed in the next book and that our characters get some sort of a happy ending after the emotional rollercoaster of this one.
Was totally taken by Elle and her powerful character which was refreshing to read
Penn And Elle has sizzling chemistry and it's before they even have any sort of relationship it's just consumes the reader there's soo much sizzle in the pages
Must read it's super and can't wot for the next part of the story :)
She can't trust anyone as she is surrounded by manipulators with their own agendas.
Peppers writing is sublime and the story flows effortlessly which keeps your attention and the pages turning.
The characters and dialogue are really good and believable.
Worth a read, cannot wait for book two.
