The first thing to note about this is that it’s a bit heavier (solid 15 to 20 lbs). Having to carry both this and you’re your tent means that you’ll definitely want to be parked near your campsite. Not really a problem for us casual campers, though. Also, the instructions emphasize that it does need to be used with a waterproof tent (I’d imagine the insulation is goose down, so any rain would kill its insulative properties).
Set up and tear down was way easier than expected. You just lay it out on the floor of the tent and then inflate the two built in air tubes using an air pump (fairly quick). These act as the frame and are used in place of traditional tent poles. A zipper pocket lets you expose the tubes for replacement, but based on how durable they were, I doubt they’d ever need replacing. After that, you just shift it around in the tent so it settles into place and that’s it.
The nice thing about this is it feels just like a cocoon. The lining is included all the way around, even on the floor, which helps offset camping pads with low R values. And it shuts out light well if you want to sleep in. It does still have some features for airflow though, in case if a warmer day comes along. These include a small zippered window in the rear, flaps with zippers at the top that expose mesh windows, and a double zippered entrance (one mesh and one normally lined).
Tear down was way easier than expected. It comes with compression straps and the bag it came with is plenty large. Overall, gotta say this was a great choice to add to my winter gear.
otherwise it's a roomy tent. easy to set up. seems like nice quality until the lead started. The cocoon is great for light and temp. sound impact is noticeable, but minimal when you have a bunch of boy scouts laughing and giggling all around you!
I emailed the company hoping for a solution for the leak. Not sure if I can just spray on some water repellant or not.
Setting up the tent is straight forward, but it does come with instructions. Two poles cross to form the foundation and you stake it in place. The stakes are durable metal and aren’t L shaped, which helps prevent bending them out of shape.
The third pole is used to support a front porch area. It overhangs nicely, which gives you a place to keep shoes, etc. Also, it has a double entrance, one to the porch and one to the interior of the tent. Each entrance has two flaps closed with zippers and Velcro, one solid and one mesh to keep bugs out and let air flow. The Velcro stitching was a little weak, but they were backups for the zippers anyhow.
Air flow is especially important as this is a water proof tent and only has one entrance. At the rear of the tent, there is another small flap that can be unzipped to expose a mesh window and further promote airflow. The same feature can be found in the roof of the tent. After using it on a warm day, I didn’t have any problems with overheating.
Finally, there are two pockets inside of the tent on either side. The tent size really only accommodates 2 people as stated (175 lb guys, 6’ 0”), so I didn’t really find a need for more pockets, although one near the ceiling may have still been nice. Lastly, the tent was tall and felt roomy, which I assume was intentional to help accommodate the cocoon insulation. This made it slightly more susceptible to wind gusts, but as a somewhat taller person, it was nice to be able to kneel in an upright position without my head hitting the ceiling.
Overall, this is a solid tent that has excellent accommodations for keeping the water out while allowing air to flow. Even without the cocoon insulation, it’s a great option for Colorado camping.
I bought this tent for my upcoming camping trip to Colorado. I wanted to buy a good tent that will take the elements and is really water proof. I wanted to buy the combo of the duo and cocoon but they where sold out. So I just bought the duo. It came in today and I set it up in my back yard to inspect it before I leave For my trip. It’s currently 20 degrees out side. Setting up was easy 10 minutes max. One big difference I notice between my Coleman tent and this was the materials. It feel rugged and well made. I really loved the stiching it’s made in a way where it’s waterproof. The zippers are awesome. I love the stakes that it came with Very sturdy light aluminum. Inside the tent was quite I could not hear the wind very much. It retained my body heat really well. Everything about this tent feels well made. It’s defiantly worth the price. I really wish I could of bout the combo, if you try to buy the cocoon separe it’s 300 dollars. You save 50-80 dollars buying together. I will post pics this weekend. I’m going to try buy more of crua product and review them I’m really loving this tent.
