Got this drive together with Kingston 4GB Kit to upgrade my Early 2009 13-inch Macbook so I could finally load the latest Mac OS version. Followed the instructions to setup the disc via the Transfer Kit and included SW, powered off, took out the old drive, put in the new one and all set. Got Mac life extended for two more years at least.

Note: I had to use T8 bit/screwdriver to take the old drive out and install this one on my Macbook.

UPDATE 07/29/13: SSD crawls. Not sure why...maybe a firmware update? Oh yeah that would mean transfer all the info off and re-load. Huge inconvenience...ugh.

This is the 2nd one I've had....performance w my MacBook pro is OK. 1st one was terribly slow sent it back and decided to keep things lean on the OS as not to bog it down...which makes no sense because buying a SSD is all about performance. Oh well.

One item of note is that due to the size of the drive in contrast to the OEM drive it has a gap between it and the body of the laptop, thus when flipped over it taps agains the inner case, maybe I'm missing something.

But then it died. I was very happy with the performance when I first got it, but obviously in retrospect, it seems not to be very useful. Luckily I didn't have anything too important on it, but that's just by chance. I'm not sure if I'll be able to retrieve any of the data at this point.

I bought this drive thinking I would upgrade my netbook. I have an Acer Aspire One 725-0687 and was hoping that this would be an improvement in speed for the netbook. It was not. Be aware that a slow computer will not benefit from an SSd drive, much less a slow one like the Crucial V4. This drive has modest read rates (220mbs max) and horrible write rates (75mbs max). The write rates put this drive on par with a standard platter drive and the drive is only SATA2 instead of SATA3. I actually upgraded my Acer with a 7200RPM Seagate drive that blows this SSD out of the water as it gets above 100mbs on the write rate.

That being said, I did put this drive in a faster laptop (Samsung RC512) and it did perform better than in the netbook although it was barely better than the platter drive that I replaced. I eventually took this drive out of the Samsung and replaced it with and Intel 520 SSD that is incredible compared to the Crucial V4 SSD. Currently the Crucial V4 is not fit for anything except external storage due to the slow transfer rates.

The kit that comes with the drive is great. I love it. Apricorn is the manufacturer of the transfer kit and they really do a great job of making this easy to replace a laptop HDD. It is not limited to the drive type or brand so it can be used with and 2.5" drive you have. The software makes it easy to copy and resize partitions as well as being able to select what data to copy. This is the best part of the whole kit.

Pros:

Great data transfer kit with the drive.
Easy to install.

Cons:
Poor data transfer rate.
Drive is SATA 2 not SATA 3.

This drive is not really worth buying. The data rates are poor and the overall storage capacity is small compared to a platter drive. look at another drive such as the Crucial M4 or even a different brand and make sure you get SATA3 drive if your computer supports it.

This drive isn't bad. I don't have a lot to compare it to. I would say Crucial's biggest problem as far as reliability is the firmware on their drives.in the last couple years I have bought 5 of them. They all have had the firmware issue. Causes the BIOS to drop the drive and of course NO boot. All these other posts complaining about their drives failing, I kind wonder how many of them just needed the firmware updated. Crucial is a good company and makes good on their warranty. It is ok for a inexpensive drive and a starter SSD. If you have endless funds, I would look at other drives for sure. But I would suggest this as a starter.

I went and bought another drive that is a Hybrid SSD and now I use this one as a backup drive.

I don't think it is the drives fault, maybe that Windows XP doesn't know how to utilize it properly.
