Also, some may say the MX100 does not provide top-of-the-line service. I say that is not needed for average users. The price vs. performance equation must favors the MX100. Also, at least on my machine, my SATA bus can only max out at 3 gbps, so no to pay for performance I won't be able to utilize. Also, this likely is another speed bump to my machine since the original HD had a link speed of 1.5 gobs.
I am looking forward to my machine continuing to "hold its own" against modern system. Definitely worth the cost to move to SSD and I won't ever be back to a traditional HD.
Overall, Crucial is a top of the line manufacturer with a stellar rep for reliable SSDs. This new MX100 is no exception. Put this in my MBP, formatted and restored from Time Machine and done!
Black Magic is showing 499 write and 502 reads. I paid $219 delivered for 512GB. This is a tremendous price for this capacity. I really wanted to get the M550 in 1TB, but for this price, I just couldn't justify it. I've decided if I do decide I want 1TB, I'm going to get another MX100 and run my system in RAID 0.
Again, overall quality of Crucial SSDs is phenomenal. There marvel controllers are excellent (IMO) and really doesn't require TRIM. Although I run TRIM anyway.
Don't think twice, this is an excellent consumer grade SSD from a reliable/proven SSD manufacturer at the absolutely best price available.
I did not know that this product comes with a free version of Acronis, which was amazingly helpful with creating a full bootable backup of my old SSD, which I then restored to the new SSD. In all, the whole process of migrating to the new SSD, including downloading and installing Acronis, creating the system backup, installing the new SSD, restoring the backup to the new SSD, and removing the old SSD took less than 2 hours.
The only hang-up I experienced were in the step-by-step instructions from Acronis on completing the backup and restore. Apparently their help files are a bit outdated (i.e. screen shots and menus reference a previous version of the product, not their current version which has slightly different screens and menu options). Once I figured this out, I was flying through the process.
All in all, this was an easy, smooth process, with zero issues. When I did the final re-boot to the new SSD, I was holding my breath, concerned that I would still have to end up reinstalling everything...very relieved to see Windows load successfully. I've had zero problems with the drive since installing it and performance has returned to what I'd expect of an SSD. Of course, now having 422GB free space on my boot drive means room for lots more Windows Updates, and a few programs loaded on the boot drive, if I'd like.
My computer is like new. It used to take 5 minutes to reboot; it now takes less than 30 seconds. Programs open and close with nearly no loading time. The computer runs MUCH cooler (the fans nearly never kick on now) and quieter. I am able to make full use of my upgraded RAM and run several demanding programs at once.
I recommend backing up your important files to an external hard drive before installing the SSD. I formatted a flash drive as a bootable OSX installer, and used it to install OSX on the blank SSD (several tutorials are available, such as this one: http://www.macworld.com/article/2367748/how-to-make-a-bootable-os-x-10-10-yosemite-install-drive.html). Then I pulled all of my important files back off of my external hard drive. I prefer this method to the usual carbon copy method so that I can cleanse my computer of those pesky programs I installed, used once, and then let sit on my hard drive, taking up space. Once you're finished, you'll probably want to place your old HD in an external HD enclosure so that you can access its content again if you ever have a need. Finally, be sure to enable TRIM using a program like TRIM Enabler (http://www.cindori.org/software/trimenabler/). It will help increase the lifespan of the SSD.
After a couple months of using my Crucial SSD, I recommend it to everyone. Running a hard drive is like living with dial up. Your life will never be the same.
