I normally hate writing reviews there are this negative, mainly because that means I've had a terrible experience with the product. For the first couple of months while I used this, I loved it. Quick, easy to install, and best of all, inexpensive. 1TB for >150$ on an M.2 drive is phenomenal. Then, I started to have crashes 2 months in. At first I thought it was drivers as it would only happen in games, or when running high intensity tasks. I also thought it may have just been a simple registry error in the 3 years I've been using this installation, with only cloning between new drives. Then, one day this week, I left my computer running with Halo: CE paused to go make dinner for myself and the family. When I was back, I was greeted with an unfriendly black BIOS post screen: "Please attach drive with OS". I restarted, the windows loading circle started, but it never booted. The computer just looped between trying to load the windows recovery and windows normally. I then used the recovery USB I keep handy for this very purpose. Nothing would work. I tried linux, nothing. I finally resigned to reformatting as I had a backup for this very problem were it to arise. The reformat wouldn't take. I am sure this drive is toast. I will be submitting a warranty claim come Monday and I will report back as the saga continues. This can either come back as a save by crucial, or an epic failure.

Update 5/6: Epic failure. After much back and forth I finally convinced crucial to cover shipping. They do not care about customer relations. Their standard practice for RMAs are for customers to ship them back the drives on their own dime. I don't understand this policy, which is actually quite common in the PC industry. It's a tiny m.2 drive. Just eat the 5$ and keep customers. I've had other companies send me replacements without sending out the original after just seeing the symptoms and a receipt. Crucial has some serious work to do to get my patronage back. From now on, I'll stick with Samsung or WD.

Received the 1TB M.2 SSD today and plugged it in my desktop. It recognized it right away and so I used Easus to clone my primary platter drive that had my operating system on it in about an hour. Then I restarted the computer and pressed F12 to select which drive to boot from and selected the crucial drive. Then I pressed windows button + R to gain access to HD manager and proceeded to format my old drive designating it to a data drive for photo's etc. The whole operation was quite painless. It started right up and no problems. Ran a speed test with performance mark and it reads at 561 mb/s and writes at 520 mb/s so it's operating at optimal specifications. Not a single problem installing and getting it set up. I like that they included the tie down screw as most SSD's do not. My mother board didn't come with one so this was nice. Everything runs butter smooth now which is a huge difference from having a platter HD that ran at 7200 rpms. It's night and day. Thank you crucial for a fair priced SSD. The drive temp never climbs over 55 degrees celsius.

Dell XPS 13 9360 upgrade. PCIe NVMe is overkill for me, so I went with this SATA M.2 drive. I've had good luck with Crucial SSD's in the past. Crucial MX500 seemed like a good alternative to the Samsung 860 EVO...similar warranty and specs but $40 cheaper. I did a fresh install so I can't comment on the cloning software. Comes with a mounting screw, but the factory screw that came with the XPS 13 worked fine. Install went easily. Works great. 5 stars.

I bought an ELUTENG M.2 SATA SSD Housing to USB C 2230 2242 2260 2280 USB3 Adapter and it worked perfectly to clone my existing Boot SSD over to this new 1TB model. I walked through the Crucial software manually to see what the options were but ultimately used it in automated mode. It performed flawlessly and I love the high speed capacity of this device. So, I've done a similar exercise with another SSD brand and it was quite the experience. The real value add on this product is the free cloning software they offer. I didn't have to reinstall anything! Once my back up was completed, I crossed my fingers and followed the linear steps on the free software. It booted to HDD again. Then because of windows 10, I requested a special boot to BIOS and before I knew it, I was flying high on my solid state drive.

Parts fall off board. Very poor soldering quality

This ssd worked for a couple days until it failed. I opened the computer to see why it wouldn't boot and found that a small component had fallen off the circuit board. It looks like the solder quality was poor for something to break off the board without even being bumped.
Super disappointed that a product which stores important information is so cheap it'll just fall apart on you and boom, all your stuff is lost.

Easy to install, good price HUGE difference in laptop (Acer E5-575-33bm) experience compared to stock 5400 rpm HDD. Boot time went from 2+ minutes to 30 seconds, from power on to using an app. Everything feels “snappier”. Crucial Software made it incredibly easy to clone the drive and boot from the SSD. Came with installation screws.

Purchased 2 x 250GB to run as a RAID 1 cache drive for a network storage device. Whilst the drives work and achieve their claimed read/write performance figures they do have a few flaws, one of which was particularly concerning.

The first concern is the incomplete SMART health monitoring data set. The required data is there but a few fields are not correctly populated. Crucial do publish a table to convert the values to a more friendly format but that should not be necessary. This also means that some useful information cannot be read by automated health diagnostics, including the 'expected life remaining' value. Again, this can be worked around but the end user should not need to.

The second minor point is that the internal temperature sensor over-reads by around 4 deg C. Whilst I would rather have an over-read than under-read this does have an interaction with the final issue.

The third and more major point is that these drives run very hot, even at idle or just powered on. Whilst we are used to blazing fast NVMe drives running rather warm these are just slower SATA drives running without an enclosure. The drives ship with no heatsink or requirement to fit one but run at over 50 deg C with only power applied. Of course, when fitted in a more confined space (eg laptop or beneath a major component in a desktop) providing additional heatsinks is just not possible; but in my case the SSDs were fitted in a dedicated bay with 2 additional heatsinks. Adding large additional heatsinks and increasing the vent fan did help a little, but when under load the SSDs climbed above 72 deg C (reported value, 68 deg C actual), triggering a system safety shutdown.

I have since found other reviews on other sites noting the same issues experienced by my 2 drives. The 2 star review reflects the positives of price and read/write performance and the huge negative regarding temperatures. Given that the M.2 form-factor was designed for confined spaces it is difficult to recommend these drives. Even in my case, blessed with free space and airflow it is a challenge to keep these drives at a suitable temperature.

I have ordered 2x 256GB Samsung 860 Evo SSDs to replace the Crucial MX500s. Even without additional heatsinks the Samsung SSDs run over 20 deg C cooler than the Crucials. I understand that the WD Blue also run at a cooler temperature too.

A surprising misstep by Crucial and not typical of their products.

Si, è vero questi dischi M2 (sata o NVMe) sono molto performanti, soprattutto la versione NVMe, e si possono utilizzare in abbinata ad un altro disco (specialmente nei portatili) occupando uno spazio minimo. Questo è uno dei grandi vantaggi.
Dall'altra parte hanno un grosso, ma proprio grosso, svantaggio: la temperatura. Soprattutto con gli NVMe i gradi raggiungono certi numeri da capogiro, ma anche questa versione M2, meno spinta, non fa da meno. E' vero, in idle in un case desktop, sta tranquillamente sui 50° e questo non è per niente una cosa positiva. Nel tempo e soprattutto nei trasferimenti dati, la temperatura tende a salire vertiginosamente, fino a superare i 70/75°, vale a dire la temperatura di funzionamente dichiarata sulle specifiche. E questo non è un problema di Crucial, ma proprio della tecnologia M2 (in futuro dovrebbe uscire un nuovo standard per la gestione delle temperature).
Cosa fare quindi ? Rinunciare alla versione M2 e orientarsi verso quella da 2,5"? Si, può essere una soluzione, e tra le altre cose, è anche per questo che ho dato solo 3 stelle. Non per problemi al disco, ma per una "incosciente" strategia di vendita. Tenete poi conto, che se nei portatili i dischi M2 si trovano "senza aria", nei desktop generalemente si trovato vicino alla scheda video e/o al processore, non certo posti freschi...
Però c'è una soluzione, senza dover comprare dissipatori after market, piuttosto che puntare ventole direttamente sul disco (anche perchè non otterete dei buoni risultati ), ma applicare delle regole di gestione energetica già presenti in Windows. E vi posso assicurare che dalle temperature di 50° in idle, ho raggiunto i 30/33°. Si, avete letto bene, 17/20° in meno. Ma solo in idle, perchè poi se trasferirete dati, le temperature si alzeranno velocemente, ma altrettanto si abbasseranno velocemente appena finito. E nel tempo, il vostro disco vi ringrazierà.

Quello che bisogna fare, è abilitare un parametro tramite registro, oppure digitando una riga di comando.

Dopo aver aperto una riga di comando come amministratore, digitate questo :
powercfg -attributes SUB_DISK 0b2d69d7-a2a1-449c-9680-f91c70521c60 -ATTRIB_HIDE

REGISTRO :
Oppure regedit, e andate a questa voce :

e modificate il valore Attributes da 1 a 2

Salvate e riavviate.
Ora andando nel Pannello di controllo/Opzioni Risparmio Energia/Cambiare Impostazioni Avanzate Energia troverete una nuova voce Hard Disk con un sotto menù ( AHCI Link Power Management). In questa voce selezionate HIPM + DIPM e il gioco è fatto. Vedrete immediatamente le temperature diminuire sul vostro disco M2.

Semplice e molto efficace. Provare per credere :-)

Forse non tutti sanno che esiste un software propietario della Crucial, chiamato "Crucial Storage Executive" con cui è possibile, dopo averlo installato sul proprio pc, aumentare considerevolmente la velocità di questo ssd! http://it.crucial.com/ita/it/assistenza-crucial-storage-executive Da questo link è possibile scaricare il programma ed abilitare "Momentum Cache", che aumenterà considerevolmente la velocità in lettura e scrittura del vostro ssd MX500, (con il programma CrystalDiskMark si può testare appunto la velocità https://osdn.net/projects/crystaldiskmark/downloads/68624/CrystalDiskMark6_0_1.exe/); poi potete anche abilitare l'Over Provisioning per aumentare l'affidabilità e la durata della vita dell'ssd! Devo anche aggiungere però una nota dolente: dopo due mesi di utilizzo l'ssd in questione è completamente andato non permettendo più l'accensione del notebook in cui era installato, presumibilmente per un difetto di fabbrica, facendomi perdere dei dati contenuti su di esso. Non sono più riuscito ad avviare il pc poichè l'ssd non veniva nè visto nè riconosciuto. Amazon prontamente mi ha assistito e mi ha sostituito dopo due mesi l'ssd in questione con uno nuovo che attualmente sto usando. Ringrazio questa politica eccezionale per cui cinque stelle! Spero che non ricapiti più, vogliamo avere fiducia in Crucial!

The drive delivered to me was dead on arrival. Its not getting recognised by system anywhere and since its not replaceable or returnable, I'll have to bicker with the manufacturer myself for a bad drive. Disappointed in Amazon this time.
