what you may not know is that most computers run 32bit versions of windows. Why is this important to know? Well 32bit versions only see about 3.5gb's of memory! So even if you add 8gb's only 3.5 will be usable! So take a few seconds to check your system out prior to purchasing.
Another good reason to scan your system with that tool from crucial is, your computer may have 1gb installed already and you want to up it to 2gb's so you purchase the extra stick only to find out you only have 2 slots and they are both full because the company put 2 512mb sticks to make up the 1gb supplied with the computer! Not a big deal but better to know in advance as adding memory on some computers is a major pain in the butt! Like netbooks that require you to pry off the keyboard and more to get to the memory! So check before you order, memory is extremely cheap these days and it makes such a difference that it would be foolish not to max out the memory!
Hopefully I was able to help someone!
The memory module was easy to install; it took no more than 5 minutes, but probably less. I installed it before turning on the computer for the first time, and when I booted it up, it recognized the memory immediately.
I've been using the netbook every day for several weeks now, and having the extra memory makes it a really great little computer, and very inexpensive.
Be careful to make sure your computer's memory is upgradeable, and that this is the correct memory module for it. On the specifications for the computer, you should see the amount of memory installed and the maximum possible.
One thing that would be very useful, but that would be difficult to keep up to date, would be to have a on the Amazon web page a list of the computers that the memory module could be used for. The Crucial Technology company has a procedure for finding the correct module for your computer, but none of the ones it suggested for mine were available from Amazon, and I wanted to order from Amazon. Amazon suggested this module for my computer. I compared the specs of the two modules suggested by Crucial Technology and this one suggested by Amazon, and they seemed to be pretty much the same. So I ordered this hoping it would work, and it did.
Part Number: CT1267113
* Module Size: 2GB
* Package: 200-pin SODIMM
* Feature: DDR2 PC2-6400
* Specs: DDR2 PC2-6400 * CL=6 * Unbuffered * NON-ECC * DDR2-800 * 1.8V * 256Meg x 64 *
On the plus side, it is very easy to replace the memory in this netbook. I am just out 12.99 since I probably won't bother to try to return it... of course, I cut the dratted plastic packaging to open it and it is no longer "unopened." There is no way to open the packaging without rendering it impossible to repackage in a pristine state.
So for those of you who own an ASUS Eee PC 1015PE, this is what you need:
ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1015PE:
2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 PC2-6400 SO-DIMM
with recommended CL (Cas Latency) of 6.
There are several of these on Amazon. If you search for those exact specs, you should get close to what you need. Make sure your BIOS is upgraded to version 0801 or higher before ordering, as older BIOS versions have a problem with the 16-chip versions of 2GB SODIMMs.
I give the product five stars, but take away a star for Amazon's lousy recommendation system that doesn't have any of the facts right and leads to so many people making the wrong choice. You can find Crucial, Patriot, and other brands on Amazon if you look for the right type. Good luck.
Top reviews from other countries
So I finally decided to take the plunge and upgrade from 2Gb to 4Gb of memory. Like some of the other reviewers I checked the memory specs and these chips are not exactly the recommended part number - but match the spec in every other way. The difference may be the CL (CAS Latency?) which is CL7 for these chips - whereas the 'recommended' chips are CL5.
Anyway, I bought 2 x 2Gb DIMMs and I'm so glad I did. It was a five minute job to fit them, they work perfectly and the performance of my MacBook (running 10.7) is much improved - especially when I'm running Virtualbox, or when I'm running memory hungry apps like MS office for Mac. I think The chips I took out were CL9 or CL11- actually slower than these chips - so I don't think there is any down-side to using these parts.
Personally, besides the Usage Warnings disappearing I have noticed that the Backspace deleting key now operates much faster and smoother !!.
